kpla51 Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 Ok so got the revo sx and first day out the spool would not re engage after a cast. This only happened once and after fixing it, it worked but still believe something shouldn't fail the first day out. Im now looking at the shimano curado. Ive had great luck with shimano products in the past but its all been spinning gear. Im returning it to academy and since it was bought with gift cards it needs to be a reel academy sells. Thank you Quote

Averyj707 Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I've owned a few revos and after years of light use and multiple pawl replacements on two of the three all of the thumb buttons have started randomly not wanting to engage..... Christmas rolled around and I bought a 200i. Best decision I've made in a while, smoother IMHO, more comfortable to Palm, and an overall feeling on higher quality. I think you'll be satisfied with either model the 70 is kinda made for flipping and pitching smaller spool and smaller overall reel. Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 22, 2017 Super User Posted January 22, 2017 Just get a shimano problem solve ! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 22, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 22, 2017 Don't be afraid to think outside the box. I switched to mostly Pflueger and Okuma after years of fishing mostly Shimanos. I spend less money, and the reels perform great. 4 Quote
kpla51 Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 I fish a very small boat so I can only take one or two rods if I'm fishing with a buddy, the revo gave out when i was way out from the launch ramp. This is why I need a super reliable reel within the 200 dollar price point. Its sad since I enjoyed abu garcia but This shouldn't happen on the first day regardless. I thought maybe it was a fluke but when I got home I read its a common thing among revo/abu owners and it turned me off. There are so many great companies that its hard to choose. I think shimano might be my next try since like I said I've had good luck with their spinning reels. Lews and diawa seems like they also make great reels so Im still going to look at those. Quote
RyneB Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 Lews custom speed spool MSB, Curado, Tatula R, will all be work horses and give you what you want. I was an Abu guy for a long time, but every Gen 3 I own besides my MGX, I hate. 2 Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 22, 2017 Super User Posted January 22, 2017 Dump the abu go with something different, there is a very thin line with abu and lews imo since a lot of parts are the same and they are made in the same factory's. Phluger as mentioned above makes solid quality products. I like shimano and that's what I prefer but like bluebasser said "don't be afraid to think outside the box" 1 Quote
mwh33 Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I am a die hard daiwa and shimano fan. I usually fish high end reels by both companies: Steez, Metanium, Conquest, Antares, Zonda, IP79. I recently bought an Okuma Helios TCS and enjoy fishing it. Pretty nice work horse reel. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 22, 2017 Super User Posted January 22, 2017 If I remember correctly, the SX Gen 2 reels have a pretty good reputation. I read that many are put off by Abus Gen 3 reels. My STX Gen 1 is a fine reel. However, based on what I've read, I'll stay away from the newest models. My experience with Pflueger reels has all been positive.....but I have older models...Trion and Patriarch XT. Smalljaw67 tells me the new Supreme XT is very good. Good enough that he got a second one. You've already read Bluebasser86 opinions on them. My only Okuma is the Helios Air. Love that reel. First cast with it impressed the heck out of me. Another reel that is on the top of my favorite list is the Pinnacle Primmus. First one was around $150, I think, but the other two were just under $105. Can't find that price anymore, but it is one sweet reel. Very forgiving. When I take my reels to Florida on my visits, I always have to make minor adjustments to the reels due to the fact I have to change my casting stroke from what I use at home. All except for the Primmus. Even the vaunted Curado 201E7 required some adjusting. Haven't touched the Primmus since setting it up when I pulled it out of the box. Unfortunately you won't find either at Academy Sports. If you have been reading this forum for at least a day, then you know how well Shimano, Diawa and Lew's are thought of. Limiting price to $200 and reels carried by Academy, I'd suggest looking at the Curado 200i, Tatula, Patriarch and several of the Lew's. My only Lew's that they carry is the Tournament MB and my experience with it is very limited having gotten it just before the cold weather set in, but so far I like the reel. It is one I often recommend based on my experience, and the good opinions others on this forum have expressed. Quote
Hulkster Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 I have the shimano curado 200i and really like it. but as mentioned the SVS infinity breaking system is slightly upgraded in the 70 model. however, once you get the hang of it, the 200i is very easy to cast. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 22, 2017 Super User Posted January 22, 2017 Just go pick up a Daiwa Tatula CT and go fish! Quote
kpla51 Posted January 23, 2017 Author Posted January 23, 2017 picked up the shimano and I like it better already just casting a plug around the yard. I want to pair it with a 6'6 jonny morris carbon lite but don't know if I should go M or MH. I know a lot of rod company ratings are not what they actually are. Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 23, 2017 Super User Posted January 23, 2017 Depends what you are using it for? But i would go medium. Quote
kpla51 Posted January 23, 2017 Author Posted January 23, 2017 I fish a lot of senkos/jigs, top water and some cranks. maybe a spinner bait here and there. Ive never had a MH rod but want to stay with a 6'6 Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 23, 2017 Super User Posted January 23, 2017 I like 6'6 to its more accurate. You can always get it in mh or go 6'8 mh that matches well? Quote

Thank you Contact Abu Garcia.. You'll need to ship the Reel to them. You pay for shipping and they'll get it taking care of for you. Quote
