For some reason I feel like you might be a wind up account. So many vague topics created regarding a rod, or rod comparison, or a single lure.. 10 Quote

I have seen companies say that they are using high modulus graphite, and others saying that they were using carbon fiber. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 My take away is that graphite and carbon fiber are two different finished products made from the same base material. 1 Quote
Super User burrows Posted January 22, 2017 Super User Posted January 22, 2017 So what I'm getting from this article is carbon fiber is stronger although it being graphite the temperature at which carbon fibers are made make it a stronger material and graphite when form at a higher temperature becomes easier to break? I'm still scratching my head. So I guess carbon fiber would be the stronger blank more superior to graphite which is heated at a higher temp making more prone to break? Quote
OnthePotomac Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 You see carbon fiber automotive components on high end cars, but you will not see graphite components. Quote

Super User burrows Posted January 23, 2017 Super User Posted January 23, 2017 Ok so the bottom line is carbon fiber is the stronger blank graphite which is the exact same thing just heated at a higher temperature is weaker so now the question remains which one is more sensitive? kcdinkerz Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 I like carbon fiber on my reels and graphite on my rods lol. Quote

Super User MassYak85 Posted January 23, 2017 Super User Posted January 23, 2017 Graphite in it's purest form is what ghoti posted above me, a very brittle mineral. However I am not sure what rod manufacturers are referring to as "graphite". They obviously aren't making rods out of extremely brittle raw graphite (pencil lead), they have some manufacturing process behind them. I believe Carbon fiber is a blend of different polymers that contain carbon, layered and heated in such a way to achieve the high strength and flexibility it is known for. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 23, 2017 Super User Posted January 23, 2017 For what it's worth fishing rods use PAN (polyacrylonitrile) carbon fibers or Rayon fibers. We use PAN fibers to reinforce engineering resins to increase strength in aerospace, similar resins and processes are used to make fishing rods. Tom Quote
