Bye, Bye BPS Extreme Line

I've had the 2017 BPS catalog for a couple weeks now and I am a bit saddened that the Extreme line is not there. I actually like the Extreme series, especially when they went on sale. I bought the last iteration of the BPS Extreme baitcast reel last year and it's a very good reel. I've had Extreme rods through the years but either ended up selling them or trading them in for the Classic sale. Nothing matched better than the green Extreme rod for my Shimano Curado 201E when I had that rod. Only reason I got rid of it is it had a fore grip. I know, it's not that big of a deal but at a time when most of my split grip rods didn't have a fore grip, I got rid of the Extreme casting rod. Now I need to head to BPS in Rancho Cucamonga soon and see if they still have those rods.

 

I hope that when BPS comes out with the spring catalog the Extreme rods and reels will be back, all new and updated. Not holding my breath on that one...I guess the Carbonlite and PQ line were better sellers for BPS.

Got a couple of Extreme Rods.  They are work horses and I like them.  I beat the heck outta them and they come back for more.  They will be missed

They have too many levels.  Look at Bionic Blades if you liked the Extreme.  Very similar, and decent sticks for the money.

I agree.  I won't mourn the Extreme long as I am buying "better" equipment these days but they were a good intro to a higher level equipment than I ever used before and I do like the ones I have.  I will continue to use them until they are unusable anymore.  I liked the  "Power Hump" handle.

A good, serviceable rod and I've caught a lot of fish on mine (including a lot of bottom-contact).  I bought a total of 9 Extremes over the years - 7 of them were of the generation shown in the below photo with the attractive (to me) green basketweave pattern. I also have 2 travel rods from the generation after that. I broke my trusty and much-used 7' mf casting rod but I still have and occasionally use the other 8.  I bought all of them on sale for prices ranging from $40 to $70. BUT, when the Carbonlite rods were introduced at the same list price as the Extreme ($100) - it was "game over" for the Extreme as far as I was concerned.

As John said above, the Bionic Blade is not a bad rod (I have 4 of them) and is a good candidate in the BPS line-up if you're looking at a price-point below the Carbonlites. AND, as always with BPS stuff, WAIT for the sale...

My Father and Grandfather still have some Extreme's from the late 90's/early 00's that they still use. They love the powerhump grip on the cork handle because they hold their rod down there. I still have 2 myself stashed away at my parent's house somewhere. I figured they would eventually go away with the Carbonlite series.

Are the stores still carrying the green split handle rods or did the pull from shelves? I live 3 hours from the closest BPS or I'd look for myself.

Will be checking Hampton store soon, but I was never

a big fan of this particular series, though they're good

blanks.

The rods are ok but, the reels are junk! The high end bait casters are good but you can keep the rest!
