I am currently shopping around and getting to know the new models of trolling motors.  My need is not so much for power, but I MUST have the best possible weedless motor or prop available.  The only limitation is that my system will be 12 volt.

What's the best weedless system out there?

I think you will find that all trolling motors today, relatively speaking, are great in grass and weeds.  It will just come down to whether you're a Motor Guide or Minnkota guy.  i personally have a Minnkota 12V, 55 lbs Thrust troliing motor that is going on 10 years old and I have not had one problem with it.  So if my trolling motor that is 10 years old has NO problems in the grass and weeds, the new ones can only be better.

I believe they also make two different types of props for TM's .... a speed and a weedless one.  I just have the generic Minnkota weedless prop and it does great.

I have a Minnkota Maxxum 74.  It's a 24 volt, but it will plow through weeds with ease.  I have yet to have any weed problems on this motor.  If their 12 volts motors are as good as the 24s, then you sould be good to go with a MinnKota.

They've pretty much designed these things about as weedless as they can get. Efficiency at cutting through weeds will depend mostly on the condition of your prop and how fast you run it.

That said, I prefer Minn Kota over Motorguide. They both have their faults and quirks but Minn Kotas hold up better IMO.

I've been happy with my Minn Kota All Terrain. I've got the first generation Weedless Wedge prop on mine and have never had weed problems. Of course, something tells me that fishing in the weeds up here in Maine might be a little different than weed fishing down in Florida. You might need to rig up a gas powered weedwacker with a big steel saw blade prop for the thick stuff down there.  :D

I'm surprised that Minn Kota gets such rave reivews.  I guess because they sell them at Wal-Mart I figured they had to be the lesser brand.  Glad I asked.

MinnKota's are easier to find parts for local I think. At least in my area...

I can go to any Bait Shop or local Marine and buy a new prop or components for a MinnKota...

Not so with MotorGuide...(which is what I have now)...

I would see which is more popular in your area and which is serviced in your area and buy that brand...

Do yourself a big favor and once you decide on brand go spend the money for a Kipawa prop.  I have one on my Motorguide and that thing is definitely weedless.  Motorguide finally bought the idea and now sells one that they call "the Hydrilla Hacker".  Same as what I bought direct and for less money.  Not sure you can still get it from Kipawa.  I have  contact info for the Co. if your interested.  Oh, my buddy also has one on his M/G.  Also noticed an increase in speed and power/torque.

The Kipawa is the way to go . I fish in some "electric motor only" bodies of water and have a Kipawa on a 12 volt 44lb. thrust MK. The replacement prop has made an improvement in speed range and weedlessness. Also I use a set of heavy copper jumper cables so that the batt. is the bow of the boat while I sit in the stern.

I just ordered a minn kota vector 33 12v. 55lb with the weedless wedge II prop. I did some research and it gets rave reviews for weedlessness. I also like the other features, tilt tiller, backtrolling, variable speed etc.

I'm really excited about the purchase and expect it to meet my needs very well. 55 lbs of thrust on a 65 lb 14' canoe. Hang on Martha.....................weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
