William Rossi Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Mostly wood here and my dropshot hook gets snagged pretty easily when casting. No as bad when verticle where you can feel your way through the branches. I use braid and a leader so retying is a pain, especially with my bad eyes. I tried the Gammy Finesse Wide Gap Weedless #1 for wacky rigging and dropshop with poor hook up percentage. http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_18819_-1?cm_mmc=pla-_-Fishing+Terminal+Tackle+Hooks-_-Google-_-Gamakatsu+Finesse+Wide+Gap+Weedless+Hooks+5-Pack&sku=012035564&gclid=CKSZoerpxdECFcaLswodizACEg&kwid=productads-adid^70247939238-device^c-plaid^18283950120-sku^012035564-adType^PLA I can get a really good deal on these Gammy Weedless Split Shot/Drop Shot hooks #1 https://www.walmart.com/ip/41498062?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227029194262&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=62895676449&wl4=pla-99409053129&wl5=9008362&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=41498062&wl13=&veh=sem Anyone tried these or is there a better choice? Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 16, 2017 Super User Posted January 16, 2017 For me, the Gamakatsu wicked wacky hooks work great for drop shot fishing. Tie your regular Palomar knot to the eye and then thread your line down through the tube on the hook shank and the hook stays aligned. I've threaded baits on to these hooks, nose hooked baits and wacky style hooked baits and they all worked. Mostly I use them for nose hooking baits. I very seldom get the hook hung - maybe 5 or 6 times per season, tops. It is a pretty light weed guard on that hook, but it seems to work ok. Quote

Ty Both are excellent hooks, but I tend to like the DS version a little better for drop shot. I like the Wide Gap for wacky rigging. However, and this may not interest you at all, I got tired of buying the 5 packs and decided to make my own weedless hooks using a cheap fly tying vise, 40# mono leader line, thread, and some black hard as nails nail polish. Results have been fantastic for me. Pix below are the Wide Gap hooks. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2017 Super User Posted January 16, 2017 The fact you stated you tie on the drop shot weight may be your problem. It's impossible to know if the weight or hook is getting hung up initially. My guess is you feel a snag and try to pull it loose instead of lightly shaking it loose. If the weight is hung up pulling may snag the hook trying to get the weight out. My suggestion is nose hook the worm using the same hook and use a drop shot weight that will pull off when snagged. Super User J Francho Posted January 16, 2017 Super User Posted January 16, 2017 Wood + drop shot rig = problems. It's not the right tool for the job. 1 Quote
William Rossi Posted January 17, 2017 Author Posted January 17, 2017 Fisher in Trees I like those. Very nice Darren. I made some similar to that for wacky rigging using shrink tubing. I think the mono I used was not heavy enough tho. Def hook getting snagged most times. Not specifically fishing wood but do hit brush occasionally. Ty all Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 17, 2017 Super User Posted January 17, 2017 If it seems like it's the hook, and you're mostly dealing with brush (not timber), the Owner Down Shot weedless hooks are really good - just remember to use a wrist-flick set, and not a reel set when you sense a bite. I like these hooks for weed edges. This is one time where I prefer to use 15 or 20# braid, and a leader, despite my loud mouth preaching straight fluoro. Good luck working it out. Much of fishing and rigging is problem solving. 1 Quote
keltonz Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 I've had the same problem, and just started rigging my drop shop using a Trokar Light Wire Finesse Hook, rigged Texas style. Obviously you also want to use a weight with a line clip so it can break off if snagged. Caught my PB on a drop shot this winter! Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 17, 2017 Super User Posted January 17, 2017 I use the hook you link a few times with different sizes. I dont like it that much even thou it help reduce snag percentagr quite abit. I feel the weed guard which made from plastic is too soft and sometime it would come out of place. It is also pain to unhook fish since the same weed guard would twisted aroung hook and get in the way. I notmally use gammy ewg #2 size hook and hook worm just like you would with any worm hook. Chrisb1 Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Darren, I was curious do you tie just a single knot and coat it with nail polish to hold the knot? That's a great idea. Quote

That's a great idea. Chris, I use some fly tying techniques. A single knot wouldn't do the trick. I do basic variations of the video below (check his other vids, too). This guy is awesome for tutorials. Only thing is I tried using lighter line for weedguards like he uses and they were worthless, hence 40 or 50# leader line. Quote

This is what I do. Texposing the hook makes it pretty weedless/snagless. I even DS with a Skip Gap hook, with success. Even in super clear water. Quote
