CTBassin860 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I don't know if it's just the one out here (Massachusetts) but now that I've been in a few times I can say that I don't care for it.The fishing section is terrible. There is no rhyme or reason to the disheveled mess of rods. The lure selection is mediocre at best. They do have a decent selection of reels though. How are the Cabelas in your local areas? 1 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I actually like the Cabela's in my area fairly well. This is beyond the fishing stuff as well. I think most of the stuff they carry is standard price, but they run pretty good prices often as well, and their house brand of everything I have always found to be high quality for a lower price. They have a much better selection of gear than say Gander Mountain or Dick's Sporting Goods (where I now refuse to shop). I will say I wish there website was a little better organized and functioned a little better. 2 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted January 15, 2017 Author Posted January 15, 2017 Never been in a GM but DSG is pretty bad here. The Cabelas here is probably the size of the fishing section at BPS 10 minutes from my house. 1 Quote

You might be a little spoiled then But yeah definitely if you don't like it then I would just shop somewhere else for sure. That's usually my solution with those things. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I've been dealing with Cabelas online store for the past 30 years or so. I relied on them mainly for our annual trips to Canada and the border states (pike, muskies, walleye). Over the past several years though, their inventory has been progressively backsliding. It's gotten to the point where I rarely visit their website, and now deal with alternative vendors. Roger Quote
dwh4784 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 The fishing section at the one near me has had less inventory every time I've went in the last few years. I did get a good deal on a pair of rod/reel combos last year on clearance, occasionally I've scored some nice stuff that way. However I recently had a bad experience with their online black Friday sale apparently having next to zero inventory of an item they advertised. I've definitely been shying away from them lately. I have a local hardware store that has started carrying fishing stuff and some of the guys there are avid bass fishermen so they're bringing in some great stuff. It's the opposite of Cabelas, every time I go in there I waste a bunch of time looking at the new stuff and chatting with the employees that actually know what they're talking about! Quote
2tall79 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Much better than the BPS down the road. Quote
TravisVirginiaAngler Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 It's no bass pro shops but in Richmond Virginia we have a locally owned place called Green Top and it puts both to shame! I enjoy my local Cabelas though, if I'm in a pinch. Quote
Kidflex Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Cabelas has always been better than bass pro shops in my opinion at least the few I've been to in Texas and Louisiana. The cabelas in ft worth,tx is superior to the bps headquarters in Springfield. Quote
frosty Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I've been to a couple cabelas, the one closest to me is ok, much like a gander mountain. The one I went to in Dundee MI was just awesome, but I don't recall what the fishing department looked like though. I remember the first time I went to a gander mountain though, it was somewhere in Wisconsin. We didn't have any stores like that in Indiana in the early 90's. Dad and I walked around drooling for a solid hour! 1 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I used to work there. What corporate was thinking when they sent us shipments for the fishing section is beyond me. "Oh, you guys are almost completely sold out of power pro and 832, the two most popular lines we carry. We'll send you a few spools that will sell out within hours, along with 50 spools of trilene mono that will probably sit in the warehouse for months" I will say though, their Rapala selection was pretty good. Had almost an entire shelf just for them. These days I'm not really impressed with Bass Pro either. They have a lot of selection as far as soft plastics but for hard baits, terminal tackle, jigs etc there is a lot to be desired. 2 Quote

BPS never has what your looking for.If its online Thats where it is.The ship to store is horrible as it takes forever.Still better than that Cabelas though. Quote

Super User Gundog Posted January 16, 2017 Super User Posted January 16, 2017 I've noticed over the decades that BPS and Cabela's have moved more towards selling their own brand and stocking less of other companies brands. I still like to roam the aisles of both but if I'm looking for something special I will take a trip to an independent tackle store first. I can say that both BPS and Cabela's have sales that can't be beat at times. 1 Quote

Bigbarge50 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I always found Cabelas more focused on hunting and other species than bass, which while interesting, was less attractive to me than what BPS offered. As the years have gone on, both have backslid..... BPS only some whereas Cabelas seems to have fallen off a cliff both in terms of what the offer and the price they offer it at. When I lived in PA I used to drive up to the Cabelas near hamburg all the time.... then only started stopping only when I was passing through. I still enjoy going to a BPS and handling the merchandise I am interested in, even if I am not looking to buy (that no good bait monkey) which I can not say about Cabelas. Quote
Blackhawk83 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Have a nice Cabelas in Allen and even better BPS in Grapevine. 1 Quote
jr231 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 The one in Dundee is the trump card ! It was the first one I went to... What a dissapointment it was when I walked into another one lol. 3 Quote

razor6570 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I have BPS within 45mins of me and a cabelas that is about 2hrs from me. I used to make the trip to cabelas a fair amount. I have noticed that I find less deals there and there normal price is higher BPS in my area. My local BPS is pretty good. I have a gander mtn 10 mins away. It is good for general stuff in a pinch, that's about it. They don't impress me at all. Anymore I just shop online at tackle warehouse! I try to stay away from all of them. I just buy more tackle....My wife is starting to catch on. I caught her counting rods and reels in my man cave the other day. Not good..... Had to try to explain the reason for the 27 rods and reels. I felt that I explained it very well. She apparently didn't understand my logic! At least she didn't look in my tackle drawers! 1 Quote

I guess it's a poor reference really. Nothing to do with Donald Trump lol. But to do with actual playing cards. Many card games such as spades use a "trump" suit (which is always spades in spades) which is better that all the other suits no matter what.for example if diamonds are trump then the deuce of diamonds takes the ace of hearts. All depends on which game you're playing. Basically I was saying it's the best one. Lol 2 Quote
Hawkeye21 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Not sure if anyone knows this but Bass Pro Shops purchased Cabelas. It think the deal gets finalized the first half of this year. I wonder if any of the issues here have anything to do with restructuring the business. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 16, 2017 Super User Posted January 16, 2017 I have to agree with MaBassin508 as far as the Ct. store goes. It seems to be a hodgepodge of this, that and the other thing - everywhere you look! What I usually do is to order online, for the things I really need, for pickup in the store in Ct.. Then, when I get there, I keep some money aside to do some "shopping" around the store. Most times I end up buying more that way, but at least I can be guaranteed to net what I really need. Quote
punch Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I love Cabela's. We have two great stores in the Minneapolis area. I frequently score discount gift cards off ebay (like $85 for $100) and then stack them with the X off 100 coupons they regularly do. When you stack coupons codes + gift cards + points from your cabela's visa + sale items... you can rack up some really good deals. I've gotten ridiculous prices on rods/reels/clothes/baits and electronics over the years if you time it just right. Plus their "in store employee pricing" sales are awesome.. they usually do them twice a year. You really have to be a hawk and wath over their website's sale items because the good stuff goes really quick. Quote
kadas Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Cabela's stores are ok. I just find the 2 or 3 I have been to are pretty proud of their stuff price wise--JMO Quote
