Stephen Selph Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I picked up a few spools of 125 ft of 8# pound braid for only a few bucks from a TW sale recently? I mostly fish bass tournaments and mess around with crappie from time to time. Wondering what y'all use this for? I was thinking maybe some finesse drop shot fishing with a FC leader possibly? Thanks in advance for any ideas. Stephen Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 Stephen, many pros are using braid on their spinning rigs to stop line twist problems. I use it on all of my spinning rigs when tournament fishing. I don't use a leader as it puts weak spot (knot) in the line. So far, I can't seem to see any difference between "with and without" a leader when drop shotting or using it for my shaky head presentations. Remember to spool some mono on the spinning reel first for backing and to stop the braid from slipping. Quote
junyer357 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I use 8#or 10# on my UL spinning rigs for panfish and crappie. I get better distance and less problems with line twist with it over mono. For bass i use 15# and higher. I jave 15# on my dropshot rod and 20# on my senko rod. On baitcasters i prefer 30# or bigger due to problems digging in. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 Personally I never use anything lower than 15lb braid but if I had an ultralight or light rod setup I might put the 8 on that for some really finesse stuff like tiny drop shots or little inline spinners. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 Welcome aboard, Stephen! I use 10# and 15# Power Pro on all my spinning rigs, and I always tie a leader of varying pound test. Been using fluorocarbon leaders lately in 6, 8, and 10# tests. But I'll use copoly from 4-15 as well... As for 8# PP, that's some mighty thin line and would be great for a lot of things from drop shot to wacky to light TX and mojo rigs. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I use a decent bit of 8# braid for my heavier spinning setups (3# and 5# for lighter stuff). It works well for Ned rigs, dropshot, and smaller finesse jigs (hair). Will also do a pretty decent job with smaller or lighter weight jerkbaits or mini-cranks like small Shad Raps. Works fine for crappie in shallow water or if using an 1/8-oz head or larger in deeper water or when fishing more vertically. -T9 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I use 10lb Power Pro as main line on my spinning reels, I dropped down to 8 once, and promptly took it off after about one week of fishing with it. It's too thin for me on a bass rod IMHO. I had all sorts of little annoying issues with it that I didn't have with 10lb. It worked good on an UL panfish rig though. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I use roughly eight pound braid on all of my spinning rods. It works for almost everything, ned rig, wacky rig, lite cranks, etc. Just adjust the leader strength to the conditions. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 We use 10 pound Suffix 832 (that line is thinner than regular Stren 6 pound mono) on two line counter reels that we troll live worm rigs for white perch. That setup was nice! Also the fresh water white perch are delicious too. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I have 8# PP on 20 size president for a number of years no issues ned rig bitsy minnows bitsy jig small spinner baits in-line spinners and at times senko. It will hold to 12pounds or more. Tip, dont overfill spool if you do the out going line will pull off line underneath and you get knotted line some might call it a wind knot but its different. Quote
