CrustyMono Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I was poking around Walmart today and noticed the Plano Waterproof 3700 series boxes were less than $10. The Flambeau version is the 5005 and comes with Zerust. I don't have a ton of tackle, but it is a decent amount. Maybe 30 crankbaits, 10 jerk baits, 5 walking baits, 5 poppers, 10 frogs, 50 jigs, 10 spinnerbaits and some other stuff. Also I have a 3600 size Plano filled with terminal tackle, no weights, they go in a separate box, because they cause rusting in my hooks. I am not trying to brag. I know many people have way more than me. Most of my stuff is cheap, except the jerk baits, jigs and hooks, which are decent quality. My purpose was to give you an idea as to how much I have, thus enabling you to better help me. I am able to fit all this stuff in five 3600s or 2 3700s and 2 3600s. My soft plastics are in two 6" by 6" by 18" containers. Also, i have 25 packs of keitechs in their hard plastic cases. What is the best way to store this tackle? I plan on getting more, but I will focus on the stuff I don't have much of, and get nicer stuff too. I have found that all my soft plastics fit well into a reusable grocery bag. I was thinking of getting waterproof boxes, to help prevent water from getting in. I also want some kind of rust protection like Zerust or VCI. My plan is to transport my tackle in a shopping bag. I feel like the 3700 is the way to go. I can stick with the 3600 for terminal tackle. 1 Quote
ethan-333 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 are you trying to store it in a boat? or for the winter? or for fishing as a co-angler and/or from shore? 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 15, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 15, 2017 I've used the Plano waterproof boxes, they didn't stop hooks from rusting because any moisture that gets in can't get out. I've switched to the Zerust and so far so good, no rust on my hooks. As for your storage solution, sounds like a backpack or tackle bag would be a good solution. 2 Quote
TheRodFather Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Yes, I saw the same thing with the waterproof Plano boxes. I bought a few of them thinking they would be great for the wading I do for smallmouth in case I dropped it in the water. But the reality is that they hold all the moisture from a bait/hook and rust everything in the case. The regular old non waterproof of any size has worked fine for me as far as keeping rust away. Like ethan-333 asked, are you trying for a way to store all that when you walk the bank, in the boat, etc? Right now I have about 7 or 8 3700 series, each with a different type of bait in them, squarebills, deep divers, topwaters, jerkbaits, jigs, and so on. Those 3700 boxes stay in the car in a duffel bag, and I pick out what I think I might use and put it in 3 smaller boxes (they are spiderwire "medium") that fit in my shoulder bag that is easy to wade or walk the bank with. Same system with soft plastics, the bulk of what I have stays in the car. The places that I fish, I know pretty well what soft plastics work, so I pull a bag of this or that out of the car and put them in the shoulder bag as well. Once I have a boat, I'm sure I will carry all of it though. 1 Quote
"hamma" Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Sounds like the bigger tackle bag would be a good option. I've found the plano 3700's the best route to go I fish from a deep v 16' tracker, a 8' basshunter, and sometimes from shore. The plano 3700 series offer the versatility, as I keep a few empty ones,... that I can pick and choose what I want for a day of shorefishing or from the puddlejumper. Fill those few with what I want for the day, and empty them when I get home. Therefore still having the "stocked" tackle on the tracker. 2 Quote

What if i put rust inhibitors in the containers? 1 hour ago, TheRodFather said: I saw the same thing with the waterproof Plano boxes. I'm not sure how that will work out. Most all my waterproof Planos have at least 1 broken latch also, they just don't seem to hold up well. 1 Quote

Super User MassYak85 Posted January 15, 2017 Super User Posted January 15, 2017 I have like six 3700 size Bass Pro boxes, one for cranks, jigs, spinnerbaits/buzzbaits,terminal tackle, worms, craws/trailers and then one 3600 size for topwaters. I have a ziploc that I throw larger worms in (10" +) and another that I keep shelled plastics like kietechs. It all fits in a boat bag... Obviously I can't take it on my kayak or bank fishing but if I fish from a boat it works well and I can keep everything in there over the winter, and as an added bonus it's waterproof. And it was like 1/4 the price of one of those larger Plano tackle backpacks that hold the same amount of stuff. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Another option instead of paying more for Zerust or special tackle rustproofing features, just buy some dessicant on Amazon in bulk, and just toss a couple into your Plano/Flambeau/anything you want to keep moisture down. 4 Quote

I steal Silica Gel Desiccant packs out of other things I order. Like AR parts I get usually have some in the box. Electronics also have them in the boxes sometimes. Quote
