I am thinking of getting a new spinning rod. Model is 712ML (7'1" ML). It would be used as a primary setup for drop shotting small worms and a 1/4 oz weight. Secondary techniques include 1/8 oz Texas rigged 3.8" Keitechs, and wacky worms. I currently have a 1500 size reel (8.1 oz), and may get a 2500 size reel (10.8 oz) in the future. How would the setup balance out? Is this a decent rod?

They are great rods!  I have 4 Powell Endurance rods and the 734C 3D-Max rod for topwater and squarebills.

Powell's are usually a little bit heavier (weight speaking) then most rods, but the hook setting power I find to be more in Powell rods.  Just my opinion though.  you're not going to go wrong with a Powell 3D-max though.

PS, there was a screaming deal on the Flea Market for a Shimano FG 2500 a little while ago.  Not sure it it's still there.  But, that should be lighter then 10 oz.

Good luck!

I'm sorry but you are dead wrong on Powell's being heavier than most.... I've had crucials, carbonlites, mojo bass and many more, the max3d is so much lighter than all of them.... the Powell's are imo the best rods you can get for u see 200$

Hey Crusty Mono

The Powell rods are terrific. We have a dealer nearby that stocks all of the Powells, and the Dobyns rods. Too bad you don't live closer.

For the money both are great rods and interestingly Gary Dobyns designed most of the Powells and his line.  Keith and Gary are good friend.

You will like the feel of that 712ML Powell.  I would also suggest a Dobyns Fury FR 703SF. Dobyns fishes a half step lighter than rated, so that rod will do everything you want to do as well. They run $110,

I also disagree with the claim these rod feeling heavy.  It is important to match the rod with a reel of the correct weight. For example I run some Pflueger President spinning reels. Depending on my rod balance I will run either a 30 or 35 size reel. I like my spinning outfit to balance right at the front of the reel seat with the reel installed and the spool full of line. Most cases I am running Berkley FireLine on my spinning gear. By balancing at this point the total weight of the combo is less noticeable, but a combo that is too tip heavy will wear on you as you fish with it all day.

I am glad I am wrong about the weight of the Powell's.  I dont bass fish anymore so they have not been used in awhile.
