Super User BrianinMD Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 Finally got my 2015 RT188 out yesterday to get thru the first hour of break-in. With the 115hp ProXS it jumps up on plane and ran great. However, the last time I went to leave a spot I got blue smoke for about 5 seconds (none at all before) and after about 45 seconds of idling out of the no-wake area I hit the throttle to get up on plane and the motor hiccups. After a second or two it gets going as normal and ran back to the ramp like nothing was wrong. I am still in the double oiling stage so was thinking that had some to do with it, just not sure. Any have any thoughts? Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 I'm sure you have read and are following the owners manuals break-in procedure but you have made one comment that sort of baffles me. "I am still in the double oiling stage so was thinking that had some to do with it, just not sure. Any have any thoughts?" I thought the 115 Pro XS was a four stroke, and if it is, where are you putting this oil you are talking about double oiling it with? If it is a four stroke, and you are adding oil to the gas, guess where your problem is at. If you are adding extra oil to the crankcase, that's a no-no also and needs to come out. Over filling a crankcase can damage a motor. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 14, 2017 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2017 Its a 2 stroke, nice big oil tank on the front of the motor. I followed the break-in, did the 1st hour with the rpm and trim restrictions then started to fish some. The next 3 hours of break-in have only one restriction, do not run more than 10 minutes at the same rpm makes it easier to fish while doing it. Just run spot to spot. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 Break in will drink oil on the ProXS. At this point in time I wouldn't be overly concerned. Mercury 2 strokes do not like cold water. They never have. Make sure she's warmed up before you stomp on it. After 10 hours of break in, the oil consumption will go back to normal. Although, Mercury doesn't require it, there are others in the industry that recommend having the first service at this time. When I broke mine in, I went out on 2 trips @ 2 hours each and just broke it in. No fishing, just running at the recommended rpm intervals 2 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 OK. The double oiling is probably most of your problem. I wouldn't be too concerned until you get it broke in and the proper gas/oil mixture and can run it full throttle for several minutes to clean it out. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 Although Outboards may be designed to run around near or at WOT and most all are - but doing the break in right is a pretty big deal. I've never heard of anyone having any type of an engine failure because they proceeded slowly with the break-in. However the reverse is not uncommon. Sort of like rehabbing an injury - never heard anyone say "well, I rehabbed that knee way too slow - now it's all jacked up" ? A-Jay 4 minutes ago, slonezp said: Break in will drink oil on the ProXS. Also a good time to check mounting hardware for tightness & torque. A-Jay Quote

A-Jay I didn't I did mine at 75 hours which was 1 season of running and have done it every winter no matter what the hours, and I don't think I've ever even come close to the 100 hour service interval. For a weekend warrior ice out to ice up, it's difficult to put that time on the big motor...now the trolling motor is a different story Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 14, 2017 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2017 yeah she was rather thirsty for oil yesterday, ran thru 3/4 tank of gas which was almost a full tank of oil. Except for the one time she hiccuped she jumped up on plane very easy. Only did a short WOT near the end, ran 5800rpm and 47mph. Not to bad for this little boat. Quote
