River2Sea Whopper Plopper 130 loon

I just picked up the 130 size in Loon color today. What weather conditions and lake conditions do you like to throw this size bait? Also it sounds like it would be best suited to fish on braid since it's not a walking lure or popper you wouldn't want any stretch in the line when a fish hits it.

I fish mine on braid. I would use it anytime you think you can get a topwater bite. They make so much commotion that I really don't think color matters much.

I had the best success on windy days this year, but I had success in pretty much all conditions I tried it in. I think the loud commotion it produces compared to other topwaters gives the fish more to key in on when the wind is producing a lot of chop. Now I fished mine on 40lb braid and a heavy fast rod and did pretty well. I actually fished mine with the rod tip kind of high and dropped it when I saw a blowup because a lot of time they would either miss the hooks or just hit it and not eat it, and I didn't want to rip it out of their mouths immediately. Almost like frog fishing, I dropped the rod tip and then started to reel and if I felt that the fish had it I hit em. I had a pretty good hookup ratio doing that. But looking back I do think I lost fish because of that setup. The stout rod combined with the braid there was almost zero play in the system and I had a some pretty nice fish (and what would have been my personal best smallie on two different occassions) throw the hook when they came up to shake. Ideally I would probably fish it on like a 7'6" MHMF with braid to absorb some of the headshakes. But I don't have a rod like that so I'll probably try fishing it on my MHF Tatula this year and see if it makes a difference.

I look at the whopper plopper as a floating buzzbait, so I use it in the same conditions.  Windy, rain (this is my favorite), early and late in the day, anytime you think a buzzbait will work a whopper plopped could be the ticket.  It shows them something different than all of the buzzbaits they see during the sumer, plus it has the added advantage of being able to pause it around fish holding cover.

I throw the loon color most. Like blue says, I'm not sure color matters much . I throw it on a Falcon Amistad and flouro.

The lure is an option whenever you would consider a buzzbait or topwater presentation.

I've thrown this anytime I throw topwater. I have it on braid. I like it a lot.
