How do these compare to the lower end St Croix line?

Just bought a St Croix Mojo Bass and the heard about Dobyns Fury.  From my reading, it kind of seems like it's a Chevy Ford type issue.  Guess I'll get a Dobyns next year...Lol.

Glad to hear about the shorter spinning rods... almost pulled the trigger on the 702 for my daughter at ISE last year after talking to Gary and his crew, but she's more comfortable with a 6'6". Could be adding one to the arsenal soon.

I'm hung up on purchasing a St Croix MOJO Bass 7'1 M/F "Plastics" rod OR the Dobyns Fury 703 which is obviously a MH/F. What is preferable for throwing unweighted senkos and flukes? I'll probably put 12 lb fluoro on it. I won't be fishing around any heavy cover, so I don't see a huge need for ample power. Will a Medium power handle flukes and senkos better than a MH? Opinions?

My experience with Dobyns is that the 703 will fish like a St. Croix medium. Dobyns run a bit light and St. Croix a bit heavy. If you have access to both rods I would take your reel mount it on both and see which balances better. Neither one will be a bad rod.

Power is relative to lure weight and hook wire size you are using and how you generate force during a hook set. Dobyns rods most 3 power rods are medium, 4 are medium heavy, 5 heavy.

That SBR is a nice addition. I'd like to see what people think of the spinning rods, the savvys weren't that great.

Dobyns blanks are top-rung, and I'd personally rate their lower-end blanks higher than St Croix.

On a low note, I hope his new line of rods has upgraded guide-wrapping.

Detached line guides are more common on my Dobyns blanks, than all my other rods combined.

Have you ever contacted them about it? I have not had any experience with them but they seem to stand by the rods.

No I have not.

When I pay top dollar for a product, I'm hoping to avoid the hassle of customer service.

That may sound like pie-in-the-sky, but it has served me pretty well over the decades.

Instead, I made the necessary repairs myself, but kept mental notes ;)

I have never owned or used a Dobyns rod and was wondering how the Fury stacked up against the latest Mojo rod. Im also specifically looking at adding a swimbait rod maybe FR 795SB, and another texas rigging rod FR 703C?

I see mentioned that these Dobyns run a bit light and St. Croix a bit heavy. If you're use to a Fenwick where do they fall in on the Dobyns? I have a couple of St. Croix Mojo 1st edition. One is a flipping rod so it doesn't relate much and the other was a MH Spinnerbait rod that seemed a little on the heavy side before I made it worse shutting the locker door on the last 3".

Anyone use both the Fenwick and the Dobyns? How do the power ratings compare?

Ive only got spinning rods from Fenwick, and they seem perfectly fine rating wise. Dobyns does run a bit light, but check out the two swimbait rods on their website. The new 806sb is prettttty cool.

Now I haven't fished the new MOJO bass rods, but I have heard good things, however, if their swimbait rod is anything like their MOJO muskie rods, I'd stay away.

That is what I was wanting to hear. I'll probably be looking at the slightly shorter swimbait rod as a 7'11" rod is the absolute max length I can get in my rod locker without modification. Back in 2000 they didn't forsee 8ft rods much. LOL

May I ask what made the muskie mojo rod bad? Was it poorly made, just the wrong feel to you, or? I had read really good reviews on the new Mojo's.

Roger you should pick up the phone and call Gary, he appreciates the feedback.

Lots of guys say the Dobyns run lighter than other rods I do not always agree with that unless you compare it to a Veritas or something. Instead of doing that look at the rod. Gary does a great job of listing the primary and secondary suggested lures/ techniques so you can go by that. You can also pick up the phone they are great people out there.

I know you're right Tom, but I suppose I'm guilty of waiting for other customers to do my dirty work.

My hope is that I'm referring to an issue that Gary already corrected, because Dobyns blanks are truly top-rung.

I agree with that.

As for the Mojo Muskie, I've had one, and my buddy as had a few, and they are rare to survive a strike on a figure-8. The Premier has lasted me 2 years now. I have no idea what it is, since they're both SCII blanks, and it looks like the only difference is in the cork handle.

I should also add that the mojos were 8' MHs, and the Premier is an 8'6" MH
