I am looking for a rod to throw weightless texas rigged soft plastics like flukes and senkos on a baitcasting outfit. I'm looking at a Medium power rods, but what would be the preferable action (taper)? I've seen some companies make extra fast, fast, and moderate fast tips and label them all "Soft Plastics" rods. I'd like a sensitive, responsive tip like a fast or extra fast tip, but will they have a soft enough tip to throw a weightless fluke? Would a moderate fast tip still have the backbone to get solid hooksets? Any specific models or brands are welcome. I've looked extensively on Tacklewarehouse. The $100-$130 price point is where I've focused my looking efforts, and a couple models have peaked my curiosity. This is my first post on Bass Resource and I thoroughly enjoy reading all of the forums and articles. I'm looking forward to being an active member. Thanks for the advice.

Personally I'd go with a fast for soft plastics. But it's going to depend on the rod maker as well because there isn't a set standard for rod tapers. Which models peaked your curiosity, some people might have experience with the same rod.

Action and tip stiffness are not necessarily tied. It has to do more with power and lure weight rating. It really depends on the individual rod. There are fast and xf rods with a nice soft tip. senkos and flukes are far from weightless even with no added weight. In some circumstances a MH might be a better choice. Smaller versions fish well on a ML spinning rig if cover allows. A med fast is a good all round pick.

I've looked at Dobyn's Fury 703, St. Croix Mojo Bass 6'8 M/EF "Topwater" rod, St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'1 M/F "Plastics" rod, Lew's Custom Speed Stick 6'10 M/MF "Soft Plastics" rod. I know that the "Technique" is simply a suggestion and a marketing ploy, and various techniques can be used on various "Technique" rods. Do you, or does anyone, have any preference of any of these or any experience with any of these?

I've never used any of those but they are popular lines of rods I'm sure at least a couple people can chime in that own them.

For weightless plastics I would opt for a medium power and a fast action over extra fast. I want a little softer tip to help the cast load easier.

I had the same question, so naturally I did the reasonable thing and bought two rods.  :P

The first is a ML/MF-F Major Craft rod that I got for jerkbaits and small cranks.  I have caught a few bass fishing lightly weighted Fat Impacts on it already, so I am going to give it a go for senkos and flukes this year to see how it works.  The other rod is a MH/F that I bought for jigs and weighted worms, but my yard testing seems to indicate that it will toss senkos and heavier flukes just fine.

I also have a M/FX spinning rod that I had made up just for weightless plastics, so that will likely fill the role when I take out more then one rod.

Take a look at the Dobyns Fury 733...extra 3" will help in casting and recovering line on hook set. The 733 also makes a nice light spinnerbait rod, swim jig rod, and a regular size spook rod
