Anyone have any experience with cabela's whuppin stick casting rods?  Do you think the 7' medium power moderate action rod would work for crankbaits?  They're on sale for only $20, and are often on sale for even less.

I have 2 of them I use for catfish. As long as you don't mind the weight they're serviceable rods. You might have to go to a MH/M because the tips are so soft.

Thanks, would the medium heavy be better for smaller cranks like bandit 100s to?

If that's what you're mainly planning on using , you'll be okay with the MM, much bigger and I think you'll be better served with the MH.

Thanks, I was planning on using it for a general purpose cranking rod, so I would be throwing everything between big o's and bandit 100's to kvd 2.5's and little n's.  I wouldn't be using it for deep cranks much, mostly just shallow and mid depth divers.  Would you go with the medium or the medium heavy for those?

Thanks for the reply's!  Should I go with the 6'6" medium heavy moderate version or the 9' medium heavy moderate?  They don't have anything in between those lengths in the medium heavy power.

9' would be very unwieldy to me so I'd use the 6' 6".

Thanks, unfortunately that's what I've heard about the whuppin sticks more than once.  Do you have any other suggestions for crankbaits rods in that same price range?  Otherwise I'm probably going to get the 6'6" medium heavy moderate whuppin stick.

I bought a 7' 6" medium action tournament choice rod from academy sports for 15. I must say it works great for cranking. And for under 20 bucks you can't go wrong. They are glass also if I'm not mistaken.

I have the equivalent Ugly Stik and I wouldn't want to whip that heavy, limber rod all day long. I have it mated to a 6500C Ambassadeur reel with the idea that it's a good catfish or striper live bait setup, but I've never used it for that.

I just looked that rod up on their site and reviews are good. Now I'm considering one for my new "spare" topwater combo. I always keep a spare rod or reel or a mismatched combo so i can justify a new reel or rod.

That sounds great, but unfortuanately they're out of stock.  Does anyone know if they are discontinued or will they be restocked?  If they come back in stock in the next month or two I am definitely going to get one, they look to be a little lighter and higher quality than the whuppin stick for even less.  Plus they're a little longer which is an added bonus.  If they don't come back in stock I'll probably get the 6'6" mh whuppin stick.

Academy also has the Jarvis walker white tuff tip 7' casting rod that's labeled medium moderate and says it's a composite, is that rating accurate? I've noticed that academy doesn't always have the correct ratings on their equipment.

I think it's harder to make a fiberglass rod with a different action at the tip than in the rest of the blank. For that reason, I feel fiberglass rods are usually more moderate through the entire blank than a graphite rod of the same power/action. I know that's no help, and there's no rule about it. It's just how I perceive it to be.
