Coffee addict-any ideas for brewing on the water

After 23 years in the Marines I have an addiction that cannot be covered by a thermos. My wife is the same so I am asking if anyone has any ideas that will work.

 

There are worse addictions to have!

How much coffee are you drinking that it won't fit in a thermos?  Stanley makes a 2 qt thermos which will hold a full pot of coffee.  Buy that and 2 of the 32 oz Yeti style mugs, and you can keep 2 pots of coffee hot all day.

My best suggestion to you is to slowly cut yourself off the coffee.  Drinking that much coffee has shown to increase the risk of high cholesterol, heart disease and osteoporosis.not to mention what you're putting your teeth through.  I know nothing 'good' is good for you.. just some things to think about brother. 

 

 

Btw I like coffee. But am not an abuser. Is it better than being an alcoholic ? Sure it is.. but there are also much healthier habits to have.

I manage with a pot before I leave the house and a 10 cup thermos....but if kayaking, I try to fill it only halfway

They make some mighty large thermoses that will keep it hot for quite a while.  However, if you are like me and just not liking your coffee after it has been brewed and sits in a thermos for and extended time, there are some other options. 

My preferred brewing method is an AeroPress.  I use that at least twice a day to brew me a cup of coffee.  When on long road trips, I either take my hand grinder and beans if it's going to be several days, or I grind enough to last a couple of days if it's a shorter trip.  I just stop and get me large cup of hot water.

On the lake, there are not many places to stop and get hot water but they make 12 volt water heaters and kettles that can heat the water in the boat.

However I'm probably more of a coffee snob than you because I don't even drink over the counter coffee because there are very few I like.  I buy very select green beans and roast my own.  Been doing that for over 15 years.  Even built my own computer controller roaster.  So, when I have a cup, it's a dam good cup. 

 

By the way, I had a stint placed in my heart about six years ago and I asked the cardiologist about drinking coffee and he said that if he thought it caused problems, he would quite drinking it himself.   Well, he's still drinking, so am I. 

 

What's also funny, I spent 23 years in the Air Force and didn't start drinking it until several years after I retired.  Before then, I probably hadn't drank 10 cups of coffee in my whole life.

Drinking coffee is certainly not nearly as bad as being an alcoholic or a smoker.  I like coffee too and I drink almost a whole pot every morning.  I have the largest size Stanley thermos (its 48 ounces) and a 30 ounce Yeti cup.  I usually don't drink all of it in one morning (or day) but at least I won't run out when I want some.

Had a good friend of mine with the same issue. He would brew coffee right there on the deck of the boat using a Colman white gas stove (think "hiking") and an old-fashioned peculator-style coffee maker.  Worked like a charm!

Any stainless steel vacuum sealed container will keep coffee hot for hours.

 

I have a Yeti 20oz and 30oz, a 27oz Orca Cooler tumbler and a 40oz Hydroflask bottle any of them will allow me to have my coffee while on the water.

I hike a lot and honestly the starbucks "via" instant coffee isnt that bad, it's better then old gas station coffee at any rate.

I highly recommend the Aeropress. Once you figure out your preferences for quantities, temp and time, you will have the best cup of coffee you've ever had.

Even with the AeroPress, you've still gotta have good beans to make good coffee. 

The AeroPress is by far the quickest and easiest brew method out of all of them listed so far, (other than instant).  It takes me less than two minutes to brew me a "good" cup of coffee.   

If you just want a cup of coffee, most any of the items listed so far will do that.  A jar of instant and some hot water will even work but don't even thing about putting the word "good" in front of what most are going to give you.  The French press will make you a very good cup also, with good beans, but it can take up to seven or eight minutes steep time.  I can be brewed and drank my cup of AeroPress coffee by then.

I owned an AeroPress for a while and never got into it.  I never seemed to find the sweet spot in terms of grind.  Too coarse and it would be too thin, too fine and I would have to have someone stabilize my mug while trying to force the plunger down.  

 

Switched to a single cup pour-over and couldn't be happier.

Hello my name is john and i am an addict.  Now to fuel my habit i fill a Coleman water jug with coffee.  The jug is isolated and does alright but the volume is more than a few people can go threw in a couple of hours.

There's a French press attachment for the jet oil listed above.  For what you're asking, that's probably the ideal solution. I've used it and it makes great camp coffee.

Im kind of sober now. I used to drink quite a lot of coffee 5 or more each day, even more if I have real breakfast. I would look for coffee when hot, cold, tried, or just simply want to relax. Nowsaday I cut myself to 2-3 cups a day and try not to drink when restroom stop is hard to do/find.

BTW how do you like your coffee, black, white with a lot of sweet. I drink just pain black and my favorite is Kona and italian rosted but I do drink all kind including favor coffee(wild blueberry is so yummy for movie night).

BTW, black is the only way to drink it. I do not contaminate good coffee!

I drink it with heavy cream when I can get it, it's like a milkshake that keeps you awake! 

 

Over the summer/fall, I was up to between 60-80 ounces of coffee a day.  It was a little out of control, but no where near as bad as my father, who told me that when he was a young man working two jobs he would fill and and drink his half gallon thermos two or three times a day.

Stanley makes a 64 oz stainless steel insulated growler.   I use mine for transporting beer, but there isn't any reason it wouldn't work for coffee.   64 oz is a lot of coffee.
