A buddy of mine and I are wanting to hit this reservoir mid February for some winter bass action! Any members fished here? If so... results?  I'd love to know how to prepare and what to expect. Cheers! I'm brand new here.

I live 3 miles from this reservoir. With the water being dramatically down, the fish are more concentrated. I have always had good luck going into the creek on the right from the public boat ramp. During that time of year, i have caught a lot of fish on red lip less cranks, also suspending jerk baits are a very good bait there that time of year. A spinner bait with a willow/Colorado blade mix can be an effective bait when the water is up. A jig with a bulky trailer is another effective bait.

Good Luck

Great lake...i have found that the further from the ramp you go, the better the fishing.  If you make the long paddle past the two bridges yo can be rewarded with some good fishing.  I have had some great days out there for sure

Woooooo.... I have never paddled past the second bridge.  Only Jon Boated that far.  you are right, it is a ways.  I have seen every corner of that lake except the extreme beginning of the millpond.  I have even gone up the creek under I-64.  I have done pretty well here and consider it my home lake ( i lived in sandston for years).  The lake has DEFINITE seasonal patterns but will surprise you.  I can't give up my locations but here is some info.

-when you go out from the launch, that first arm or two on the side is really poor fishing, skip it.  I have found this to be the case year after year for all species (crappie, bass, pickerel and bowfin).  I met the wardens thier last year by chance.  I told them everywhere they shock up fish and where they didn't i was spot on.  Those creeks are the WORST for electrofishing survey sampling also.

-The lake has a tremendous shad population, I believe Gizzard.  When they are spawning in the spring, keep a topwater on.  I have literally seen 3-4lb bass running the shad up on dry dirt like a saltwater blitz just past the first bridge.  IT WAS ON LIKE POPCORN THAT DAY!

-With the shad population the lake can fish textbook just like Kerr at times.  When the wind blows hard, grab the white spinnerbait and stay in the wind if it is May or later.  When it is hot, there are large populations of fish suspended in open water.  I haven't tried it yet (cuz i broke my Humminbird) but it sets up for A-rig fishing perfectly.

Crank baits are BEAST on that lake at the right time.  but you gotta figure that out for yourself ;).

If you make way past the second bridge up to the right, the character of the lake changes completely.  You start seeing Cypress and the water is a lot deeper on average.  By the launch there are huge expanses of water that are <3' at full pool.  The millpond area also has boat docks as houses are close to the water.

I have two Citation Largemouth and 1 Citation chain pick from that lake.  Average spring time fish is 2.5-5lbs for me.  That is a hell of an average!

Some things to consider.... The lake got choked out with grass a few years back.  It was growing to the surface in 17'!  I stopped going in the warmer months because my son couldn't contend with that obstacle.  They stocked carp HEAVY so I am not sure what the loss of habitat has done to the fish or how much habitat has been lost.  Tournament fishing has gotten very heavy at that lake in the last few years also.

Baits that work consistently for me:

Spinnerbaits

Poppers

Prop Baits

Plastic worms in varying sizes/ rigging methods

CRANKBAIT

Small swimbaits ( I am a finesse type of guy!)

DM me if you guys want to or get me on IG: @aliloffkilter since you are in my neck of the woods!

I have had one of my best lilly pad fishing days about 4 miles up from up from the launch.  Caught 3 citation bass that day alone and countless other good sized fish.  It is a fantastic lake I just wish I didn't have to paddle so far to get to the areas I like to fish.  If i could even just put in somewhere near the second bridge i would be golden...

Thanks so much for the feedback guys. I will post pics from my first trip there mid-February! Cannot wait to start making Diascund a regular spot, as it's 45 minutes from RVA! Cheers and TIGHT LINES dudes!

Dude, those pads back there are MONEY!  I got into them once and shad were in them! 5.5 on a spinnerbait! LOVE it.  Have you noticed the hunt club property in the millpond?  A bunch of canoes, etc in the woods.  If i could find the hunt club i was considering offering them $ for yearly access.  Hunt clubs are all about money to pay the paper company for land use.  It could work.

Went Sunday...lake is way down

Havent been there in probably close to a year, its about a 45min drive from me as well. Seeing how this is my last year of bass fishing before the military moves me to Alaska, im gonna try and get back there a few times this year. I definitely had luck back past the second bridge, so if you guys ever want to head back there and need some company let me know!!

I did notice it and every time i paddle by i try and find a name or something.  I even got out once on that ramp and looked around for something but couldn't find it....if you do figure out who owns it,send me a PM lol

I talked to a lady once who was out drinking her coffee right at those lilly pads and thought about asking her for access but it was super steep...

Let the yak go and slide!  550 cord will get you back up. LOL

I'm willing to work with you on this endeavor!  Only thing is that I have encountered...lets say a lot of "ignorance" in that county.  I have been real uncomfortable with some situations with the residents.  And that is so sad.

You know about the private side?!

Yeah i know what you mean as far as ignorance goes.  And yes, i would like to fish that side for sure.  I did see one hunt club that had land over there but i have never fished it nor have i heard much about that side of the lake.

I didn't even know about till one day a guy walking down the road spoke to me while i was in my boat.  He said "you ever fished this side?"  Im sitting in my boat wondering what he was talking about.  It isn't spoken about much.  I wonder if it is tied in with a culvert pipe or something.  When i get my side scan transducer fixed I am gonna find out. :)

you can see it if you go over by where it is separated.  there is a road that crosses over it and no culvert that i saw.  The first time i went out there i was searching the maps and wanted to head up that creek arm and couldn't find it until i realized it isn't a bridge like the other spots.  I got out and took a look around and there was no way i could haul my stuff up as it was pretty steep.

If you look at the map on google maps and go to the satellite image  and go north from the public launch you can see the small land bridge with route 620 going across.

Heading out tomorrow around 11 am. Very excited, even though I hear the reservoir is low. I've got some finesse worms and creature baits on shaky heads rigged up. Some gizzard shad colored squarebills for the shallow water and several other secret weapons ready. Hoping for just some quality fish, dont need huge numbers, but if I can get 5+ fish in the boat, I'll be happy. Cath-N-Release all day everyday!

You should be able to look at the local city's GIS viewer and see who owns the land.

Hopefully that'll at least get you a starting point for that hunt club

My buddy and I had to come back to Diascund. We got skunked in February (fished the right side, not knowing the water... and it was super shallow) but today, we went to the left (under both bridges) and my buddy had a gorgreous spotted bass, and I boated 5 largemouth, 2 pounds being the biggest. Lost a 4+ and a couple smaller ones, but I'm loving this body of water. It's gorgeous, the water is super clear, there's structure EVERYWHERE and we didnt have a fish finder, so we hit main lake points, secondary points and structure plus some fishy fishy looking inlets and creek arms. I can honestly say this is my favorite body of water to fish in Virginia by a mile. Cheers guys! Tight Lines.

Ill post here in a attempt to reignite this thread. I am gonna make the trip today. I have never been. Conditions are garbage on my home lake, so perfect time to check out something new.

I guess ill I’ll poke around that first island right near the launch and keep an eye on the sonar. If nothing over there, perhaps I’ll head across to the other side of the first bridge. Maybe fish around some of the points. The wind is gonna be a mess today. I’ll plan to keep a spinnerbait and a a-rig ties on pretty much all day.

If you’d care to share any recent info, I’d much appreciate it!

IgotWood, I don't' think many guys have hit Diascund reservoir so far this year due to the temperatures and water clarity.

Please let us know how you did and the water temperature.

Thanks.

That's OK. Now to get Travis on the water.

Come on, Travis. Put that kayak in the water and do some fishing this week.
