Madison Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Hello All, I'm new to the forum and pretty new to bass fishing. I always fished as a kid, but not very seriously. We'd fish spring evenings for bullheads and I liked catching carp in nearby Cayuga Lake and the Barge Canal system. As an adult I rarely fished at all. Then 2 summers ago I went on a canoe trip in the Saranac Lake Wild Forest in the Adirondack mountains in northern NY. Some buddies told me that I was going to be in prime bass fishing territory and gave me a few tips on how to go about catching them, so I decided to give it a try. I bought a lightweight telescoping rod & reel (we were pond-hopping and had to portage) and a few topwater lures (Rattlin' Chug bug and Hula Popper!) and for the 1st time tried my hand at bass fishing. Needless to say, bass weren't the only things hooked on that trip. Every morning and evening I took my canoe out and had a blast, catching about 40 or 50 bass total, both large and smallmouth. The Chug Bug was particularly effective and continues to be my top water lure of choice on Adirondack lakes and ponds, although I have never quite duplicated the success of that first trip. Anyway, I found this site by chance, and it looks like a great resource. I live in the Finger Lakes region of central NY, so there are plenty of bodies of water around here to explore. Seneca and Cayuga Lakes are the 2 I fish most often, as I live just about right between them. I also go to the Adirondacks at least a couple times a year, and lately my trips have revolved around finding bass. I am currently planning an early June trip to Lower Saranac Lake, where I'm told and have read that the bass fishing is fantastic. Another lake I hope to hit this summer for the 1st time is Hemlock Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. While I've been mostly focused on developing skills and knowledge as a bass fisherman, I am also interested in expanding my reportiore a bit, particularly with pike and walleye, which are abundant in many of the lakes around here. I have already read several articles and watched several videos offered on this forum, and look forward to putting that information to good use this upcoming spring and summer! Quote
