ksfishinguy Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 I feel like I might have reached the top of the mountain, owning a couple different retrieves in the MGL. Purely from a performance standpoint as a general purpose low profile rig, I've never fished something better. There are the DC reels that are pretty cool and fun, and I've only owned a Steez ex 100xs. It's close, but it's not quite up to snuff and to me more on the BFS spectrum. My question is, to those that own an MGL and other high end low profile reels, is there anything else that compares favorably? I'm always interested in trying the next rig. I have an Aldebaran BFS limited and a Pixy for BFS. Got stuff specific for cranking as well. I'm talking more general purpose. Maybe it's just time to customize. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 9, 2017 Super User Posted January 9, 2017 No doubt that the Met MGL is a top-notch, light, smooth, all-around reel (I have one on an NRX 893C). It probably is hard to go much better for a general purpose reel that suits most needs. BUT, there are other high-end reels that that would be competitive in their own niches. Just sticking to Shimano - the Met DC gives you all the advantages of the standard Met with the addition of DC braking. Then there's the Antares and Antares DC that give what some feel is the ultimate in long-distance casting. There are the Conquests for the round reel fans. I'm not much of a high-end Daiwa guy (although I have a Ryoga 1016 and a PX Type R) so I can't speak to what's at the top of that pyramid. Anyway, lots of neat stuff out there to play with if you want to go in that direction. OR, for just all-around fishing performance, just keep building up the fleet of Met MGLs. Me, I like variety and a couple years ago I made a decision to try to limit high-end reel purchases to a single example of a reel model. There is always something "new and improved" around the corner and I like to try them out and not have to worry about selling off a squadron of earlier model reels to make room for the latest gear. You pays your money and you takes your choice... 5 Quote
Gavin.Ange Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Ive been fortunate to fish and own some high end reels such as the Met DC, Met MGL, Aldebran BFS, Core 50 and so on. I can say that each one of those reels performs amazing but each one does at least one thing better than all the others. IMO the Met MGL performs all the task of everyday fishing the best, I've gotten it to throw very light rigs exceptionaly far for not being a BFS reel, And of course heavier rigs far. But the US aldebaran 50 is an incredible reel, it can throw light rigs and up to 1/2 oz jigs very nicely. Quote
ksfishinguy Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 I have a JDM Aldebaran 50. You specified US; I was curious if there's a difference in the spool or something. I really like that reel as well, but the tiny bit of play in the handle bothers me a little. Maybe that's just my reel because I've never seen anyone else mention it. Fantastic reel, though. I have mine paired with a poison adrena. Light as a feather. Quote
Gavin.Ange Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Dont believe there to be a difference between JDM and US Aldebaran 50 spool, but there is a difference with the JDM Aldebaran BFS, having the FTB magnetic braking system Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 9, 2017 Super User Posted January 9, 2017 The JDM MGL is one of the better reels I have ever used. Considering getting another but also interested in trying some new Daiwa SV reels. 1 Quote
smallies24/7 Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Out of Met MGL, 13 Met, Steez 100H, Steez Ex100XS, Pixy Type R, Core 50, Alphas 105SV and Revo MGX, the MGL is my favorite. For every day all purpose use, the MGL feels strong and sturdy, light as a feather, palms nicely, holds enough line, has a smooth retrieve, looks good, has a smooth and reliable drag, and casts effortlessly and consistently. My favorite reel. 1 Quote
Big-Bass Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 What ratio MGL are you guys referring to? Quote

offsidewing Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Met 13, Met DC, Aldebaran 50, Core 50, and Met MGL. The Met MGL is the smoothest and least troublesome of the reels I've fished with. I smile when I cast it. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 My steez's are still my favorite reel in hand to use. There is something intangible about them they just feel right. However based solely on performance. I give the edge to the MGL as well. Without a doubt my best performing reel. That thing is amazing, effortless casts that fly right off the spool. Also has a very nice retrieve. I remember the first cast I made with it I was amazed, fished it all year and still amazed. Truly a great reel. Quote
FrankN209 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I've been thinking about picking a MGL up. Lower ratio for crank baits. Quote
