first should be a huddleston.  The second should be a ms slamer, and then look at something like the r2s swaiver.  None of these baits are very expensive but proven fish catchers and a grate way to get into swim baits.  Check out some dedicated swimbait forums and you will get a lot more information on this technique.

I like the Bull Shad, but the Slammer gets my vote.

What rod & reel do you plan to use?

Like Tom said it might depend on your gear's limitations.

And you might consider your fishing style. If you fish mostly shallow or from the bank I'd do a slammer or slow sink bull shad. I tend to throw hudds deeper but I just got some rof 5's so I'm gonna throw them shallow this season.

For what it's worth, my first swimbait was a Gantarel

If there is a "guaranteed" bait to catch fish, that is easy to throw and won't break the bank it's the Mattlures Hardgill.

I fish all the baits mentioned above and all are legit, but IMO the hardgill is tough to beat anywhere in the country.
