Very nice collection. Maybe one of these days I'll get as organized as you and create a list of all mine for reference purposes. I've actually been trying to purge some to make more room in the office and keep the wife happy :)

Of those on your list, I have to say that Royce Mallory's 1950 "Pork Chunk Fishing" booklet was a surprisingly fun and interesting read, a favorite of mine. And Bob Underwood's 1975 "Lunker" is another that has always been a favorite.

On the flip side, I think the book that most surprised me (to the bad side) was John Hope's 2001 "Trackin' Trophies." I had such high hopes for that book when I got it, but was sorely disappointed. I learned much more from the double issue coverage of the subject in In-Fisherman Magazine by Ralph Manns, which even included contour maps and tracking routes of about a dozen of the big beasts, than I did from the book itself.

That's funny RW, I know hootie has a large list posted somewhere as well :)

I've been meaning to sort of catalog the fishing book shelves for a while, and we just happened to have a couple of snowy days, so here it is.

T9, I thought I was the only guy on the forum, or possibly anywhere, who owned the pork chunk fishin' book, you are a sick puppy :)

I was a little disappointed in the John Hope book too, I was hoping for a lot more detail, but it was still interesting content.

That's a heck of a list there! One thing I do every few months is go to goodwill or some thrift stores or even garage sales and check out the books. Seems I always find a few of them and there super cheap. A lot of them that I find are from the 60's or 70's and it amazes me just how far the sport has came. I have quite a collection building up of them.

Always looking for more recommendations.

That book shelf packs some punch :wink1: For northern natural lakes guys, as well as those who like to "pattern fish," Babe Winkelman's Largemouth Bass Patterns book is an easily overlooked gem

Well I literally started reading Spoonplugging last night and bought The Comprehensive Guide to Largemouth Bass Patterns & Lunkers off Amazon just now.  At least it's winter so I have some time.

Great list!  Wow!

I just finished "High Percentage Fishing" by Josh Alwine.  Some interesting and debatable conclusions.

Smallmouth Bass Secrets handbook of strategies

He says he found them in a used book store a few blocks from where he lives

I agree totally.

You'll notice I didn't * that book, it felt like he was using statistics more to tell the story he wanted to tell, not neccessarily the story that they wanted to tell, but that's jmo :)

I agree.  When it comes to environmental variables, I'm a big believer that pretty much "everything matters" to a certain extent.  He pretty much said that the only things that mattered were fishing pressure, time of day, and wind.  My takeaways: fishing pressure, time of day, and wind are the most critical environmental factors... take the other stuff into consideration, but don't obsess about it. :)

PS, i just went through this list again and added all the multi-star books to my Amazon wish list.  Thanks for putting this all together.

I'd recomend Mike Iocanelli's Fishing on the edge. It gives tips and tricks after each chapter. What I liked most is it gives an inside look into his life starting from his first fish all the way up until about 10 years ago. How he climbed his way up the ladder, his struggles, how he almost walked away from the sport, and how fishing cost him his first marriage. A good in depth look into the life of a professional angler.

Yes, my experience exactly. All I could think was, now here's a prime example of the reason to have training, and oversight by a competent committee and peer review. What a shame. Would love to have seen Ralph Manns attempt at making something of all that work.

Then there's Bill Murphy's book. Great book, excellent illustrations -a lot of work done there. However, I had some difficulty with the 'voodoo' -ideas and conclusions drawn from low probability events.

Paul, It was published in 2005, ISBN#1-890280-13-5.

It's part of a collection called the Ultimate Bass Library, use those words, or bassmaster in your search.

- When I got this book, I actually bought a "lot" of books from the UBL collection, this one just turned out to be one of the gems.  You may have better luck finding it that way, they sell these lots on ebay and Amazon.

- There are 29 Bassmaster articles from the late 90's to early 2000's in this book, all about ponds, just a really nice collection of articles to have all in one place.

They did a great job on this series, I think I owe Hootie for mentioning these books at some point on the forum, that's how I "discovered" them :)

Good Luck!

re: The John Hope study, T9 mentioned the InFisherman article, but there is also a very good breakdown of that study (Better than Hope's own book) and several more telemetry studies, and a comparison of them, in the IF Critical Concepts Book #1, Chapter 7!! Check it out.

Thanks for the list. You reminded me that I needed to order a couple of Doug Hannon's books.  In doing so I realized that I hadn't heard of his passing.  He was a real inspiration to me and I tried to mimic his approach when I was first learning to target big fish.  Anyone who has caught more than 800 bass over 10 pounds deserves a special place on my bookshelf.

Are all the UBL volumes collections of articles like this? If so, I didn't know that -- I have a few titles in the series I bought used (seasonal patterns, cover and structure, and advanced techniques). They're pretty nice, full-color, informative, look good on the shelf...that "small waters" volume is one I haven't seen before, but is definitely on my radar now, too -- thanks.

Also, the ones that say "large/coffee table" are very thick books with somewhere b/w 100-125 articles in them.  These aren't sorted by topic like the Ultimate Library series, but all of the articles in these books are some of the better quality articles from Bassmaster.

I highly recommend these.  It's just nice to have the cream of the crop articles all consolidated down to a few books.

Best of all? There are no ads in these books!!! :)

Thanks 12#, maybe I'll give Ike's book a look!

I got the Tom Mann book, "Think Like a Fish", not really expecting much, it just turned up on a recommended list after looking something else up om Amazon or someplace, and that was a really interesting read.  You never really know which ones will be good (at least the less-hyped ones) until you get them in your hands.

I agree totally.

You'll notice I didn't * that book, it felt like he was using statistics more to tell the story he wanted to tell, not neccessarily the story that they wanted to tell, but that's jmo :)

The whole point of using statistics is that it eliminates personal bias.  Most fisherman have that in spades.  Believe me, I would have loved to have been able to statistically proved a lunar connection or that certain barometric pressures increased bite rates.  I looked at tens of thousands of data points from multiple species from all over the country.  It's just not there.  They are myths.  Beat me up on my writing, but don't beat me up on making the data fit my agenda!  The only one I have is catching more and bigger fish!  :)

In all seriousness, you've got an impressive list.  Reading those will make put you in the top couple percentile for fishing knowledge.  Hats off!  Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to me to explain the data or methods in greater detail.  I don't frequent this site all that often, but there are lots of ways to reach me.

Tight Lines!

A less serious but still informational and enjoyable short read is Jimmy Houston's Caught Me a Big 'un.

It has great stories about some of his experiences in the tournament scene but also applies lessons and relevant bass fundamentals throughout.

I know it's not Winter yet, but I can't resist giving this old thread another bump, as I think about how I'm going to occupy myself for the next few months...

A few recent acquisitions:BassBooks2023-1.jpg.55a8532b0c73788d0eb966db86eccc55.jpgBassBooks2023-2.jpg.6b17c0c85eee337058b6ed9451a9fd02.jpg

I don't know if these are any good, but they all looked interesting.

The Grand River book (my home river system) is written from a fly-fishing perspective, but includes bass and has a lot of detail on the food chain and habitat in different river sections and major tributaries.
