Since the price to be a Marshal in the Classic isn't cheap, you tend to get an older, more sedate group. Some of these are tech wary, so even something as simple as the Basstrax app isn't easy for them. Then you get some folks who get tired of the responsibility a few hours in. I actually enjoyed it, made sure I logged all catches (even obvious culls) and asked the angler what he believed the weight to be. Ish & Alton Jones were pretty accurate with their weights, Dennis Tietje went the extra mile and weighed the ones he was unsure of. It seemed they appreciated having an accurate count of what they caught & where they were currently sitting weight wise. I think some marshals stop entering once a limit has been reached... 1 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 25, 2017 Author Posted March 25, 2017 Wiggins finally caught another fish! now i need him to have caught a couple more and i hope the same for Tharp 1 Quote

You have to pay to be a marshal ? Quote

A couple years ago my wife was selected as a candidate Marshal which she declined. It was a Bassmaster Tourney in Florida (not a Classic) and there was no mention of a fee. Roger Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 Yes, there is a fee to be a marshal. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 25, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 25, 2017 From what I've read from people who've been marshals it sounds like it's worth every penny. Does $150 sound right for the marshal fee? That's the number that poped in my head. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted March 26, 2017 Super User Posted March 26, 2017 Some strange results in this classic. 1 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 Thanks to Keith Combs surprising bomb and strador completely blanking today, I have only three inside the cut. They're in 6th, 12th, 16th, 28th, and 35th. Quote
Super User Gundog Posted March 26, 2017 Super User Posted March 26, 2017 I can't believe Greg Hackney only caught 2 fish for a total of 5 pounds today. He's one of the best flippers in the business. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted March 26, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 26, 2017 3 inside the cut for me. Alton Jones bombing today hurt. Quote

You are guaranteed 2 days, 1/2 the marshals (first signups) get day 3 and there is a random drawing for the few Day 4 spots. I looked at it as getting to sit in the front row of a sporting event. While some anglers may seem to harbor resentment for dragging a spectator around in their boat, Dennis Tietje and Alton Jones were fantastic hosts. I did everything I could to not be a problem and just observe, I know this is their office and they are working. I'll probably have to wait until 2020 for them to come back out to the West Coast, but I will definitely do it again. 2 Quote

I'd look at it the same way and as a 1 on 1 bass tutorial (as long as the guy you're with is having a good day). Even then there's still a lot you could learn just watching them. Living in central Michigan if have to travel a ways to do it but would be worth it for sure! Quote
OCdockskipper Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 Last year, tournament after tournament, at the final weigh-in I would ask myself "why didn't I choose Jordan Lee?" I have believed in his abilities and potential since I first saw him on the college trail and I truly believe that he will be both a Classic & AOY winner multiple times in his life. Yet tournament after tournament, I would find a reason to choose someone else in his bucket. I never claimed to be bright... I finally wised up and took him this week in bucket C. Wow, 56-10 on 12 fish. What a performance... 4 Quote

bmac31 Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Shot myself in my foot. I accidentally left bracket E empty. Would've picked Jones Jr. I had Combs, Ike, Lee, and Kennedy, so other then leaving E empty and again picking a favorite (Combs) who did squat I did pretty well. Brian Quote
SWVABass Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Pretty impressive showing by Lee, wished I had put him on my team as well, I had him at gville when Howell took it all. Had four guys fishing today strader being the only one not to fish today, don't know how he managed to blank on day two. Still scratching my head Quote

Super User scaleface Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 I had three top tens and still got beat by most of you . You guys know your pros . 1 Quote

This one guy in 4th for the whole thing had 4 guys in the top 8 or something like that. I wish I were that good. 1 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 I ended up gaining a decent amount of points and am currently sitting in 60% percentile. Not anywhere near where I want to be but I have a good feeling about toledo bend . Ike and Ott Defoe saved my team, and Jason Williamson had an okay finish in 21st. Still can't believe Wesley Strader zeroed on day two after sitting near the top with a 19 pound bag on day one.... Quote
OCdockskipper Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Strader, Alton Jones & Matt Herren were the 3 with 19lb bags on day 1 & zero's on day 2 (I had Herren). I wonder if they were fishing similar patterns... The other heart breaker for some was Justin Lucas, who zeroed on Day 3 and went from 9th place to 24th. He did a reverse Jordan Lee. I can now say I am leading Fantasy Fishing...............for the BR Crew . For the "Open" competition, I am in 1117th place (96.3 percentile). I thought that we as bass fishing fanatics would do real well in fantasy fishing, but it doesn't seem to turn out like that. I too wonder how some of these guys make the "right picks" week after week, I doubt they do as much research & study on it as Kyle. The conspiratorial theory part of my brain wonders if some with hacking skills are able to either get their picks in late in the first day (after following Basstrak for a few hours) or something else nefarious. Anything to sooth my ego... 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 My first tourney did me in for the long run , 567 points . I just picked my all time favorites. Since then I've done much better . I even opted for Ike whom I cant stand . Quote

This next event I'm going more with people who are showing some sort of momentum this year, are good with postspawn fish, can fish offshore, and go shallow if needed. Except I chose Cliff Crochet in bucket D because he's been on a roll and Toledo has enough shallow cover for him to fish for miles to his heart's content. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 With three top 10s -- Ike, Bobby Lane, & Kennedy, i'm at 4th place in the BR crew, now. Of course, even if everybody just picked randomly, we'd still wind up with folks at the top who looked after the fact like they had made the "right" picks every week. 2 Quote
