MDbassin Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Got a chance to go to my local bass pro and was checking out there new reels and while I was there I thought I'd try to check out some different rods I was looking at. And 1 of the rods I was excited to get my hands on was the Abu Garcia Ike series rods. I was trying to get my hands on all the same types of rods 7ft MH/F to be fair I tried out the Mojo bass, E6X, Carbonlite, lews custom hm60, and the Ike rods. What I noticed is the Ike rod was significantly stiffer then all the rest. I was expecting the st.croix to be the stiffest based on everyone saying they are stiffer but was surprised to see it was the same as the lews rod I have now (maybe lews rods run stiffer also but all I have experience with mostly is lews rods so as far as I know a lews MH is a standard MH and isnt lighter or heavier then It says). Same goes for the E6X and carbonlites maybe they were slightly less stiff but not by much. The Ike rod tho I had to be sure I was holding a MH like 3 times to be sure. The thing felt as stiff as a broomstick. Anybody else who has handled this rod experience the same thing or was it just me? Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 Which rod was it. There are power series rods and delay series rods. I fish a 6'4" delay series rod designed for jerkbaits. That rod is 60 % backbone and 40 % tip. So it is a more limber rod. I love it for throwing the lures it was designed to throw. Quote
MDbassin Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 7'2" MH/F Power series for Texas rigs and jigs Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 That rod is in the Power series. Abus tend to run a bit heavy but that rod says it handles lures 3/8 to 1 ounce, 12-20 pound test. Ike says it is designed to throw texas rigs and jig fishing. He says it is 80 % backbone and has a 20% tip. It probably only bends from the tip top guide down to the third guide. That rod is probably great throwing big jigs on deep ledges. It is numbered as a heavier rod-7206. That rating is almost the same as my Veritas 7 MH and throws my frogs really well. 1 Quote

That being said, I own the specific rod you mention. It's probably more along the line's of a heavy power. It's an excellent jig rod and I'm really impressed with it for only being $130 retail. I'd highly recommend it if you plan on using it for the recommended uses. If there is more you want to know about this rod, feel free to send me a PM. Quote
Poolshark Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Every Abu Garcia rod that I own fishes heavier than its weight rating compared to other rod makers. This to me isn't such a bad thing if you plan on using strictly for jigs and other bottom contact baits. I think the particular rod you are referring to will excel at fishing jigs and worms. As far as the st Croix mojo bass goes, the newer series has a softer tip than my avids. They are both on the heavy powered side of the spectrum Quote
PatrickKnight Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I held one of those HM60 Lews rods this past weekend and I was pretty impressed with it. 1 Quote

I didn't even plan to look at lews rods I was going to look at st.croix, Gloomis, Abu, and the bps carbonlites but while I was there I saw it and thought why not. It was surprising how good it felt Quote
CTBassin860 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I've said it before and I'll say it again.And probably a few more times.also never start a sentence with And.The Abus fish heavier.My 7 MHF Is a my frog rod.Broomstick delight.I love that thing.Its down to a 6'8" since I've broken it twice.1st gen not the 2.0 Quote
craww Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 It's par for the course on the Abu rods. Even the treble hook specific and slower action models. Some people love them. They're certainly light weight and plenty sensitive, but the tips (or lack there of) just aren't for alot of guys myself included. Not referring to overall power of the rod, just the tip itself. WPCfishing Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 If you are referring to the IKE 70-5 it's a 7' 1/4-3/4 Medium Fast action rod. I own this rod... outside of the heavy cover the rod is outstanding. The rod is a 70-30 power. I highly recommend for worming, lipless and square Bills, swim Jigs, top water frogs around docks or open water... spinner baits.. extremely versatile. Quote
