DaveT63 Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 The handle nut on my Daiwa Alphas keeps coming loose while I am reeling. I've tightened it many times, but it still comes loose. Is there a good way to keep this tight, or is there a different handle available somewhere that I can put on it with a retainer to keep the nut from turning? I don't want to spend more on a handle than I did the reel, so a hedgehog handle is out. Can someone recommend something from another Daiwa, or a cheaper aftermarket alternative? Thanks, Dave Quote

Super User iabass8 Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 If your nut keeps coming loose, the threads on the drive shaft could be stripped. A handle retainer won't keep it tight if the threads are damaged. You can try a new handle nut but if it won't stay locked, your going to need to replace the drive shaft. will be around 24-25$. I've had it happen twice. The nut size should be 10mm. Put a 10mm socket on the nut and tighten it. Don't go crazy but tighten it down. The tool that came in shimano reels works, too. The tatula handle assembly from the TT doesn't come /w a handle nut or retainer. It's handle/knobs only. You have to order the nut and plate/screw separately. Quote

Super User Angry John Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 The nut is aluminum and will deform and come loose if over torqued. I have a bunch of these reels and keep a few extra 10mm nuts handy. I would bet that a new nut retainer and screw and you will be good to go. the shaft can be replaced and i have done it a couple of times. I had to change it out to add the clicker mod also found on the tackle trap. For the cost and it being winter time you may want to take the time to upgrade and break down and clean the entire reel. Yudo1 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I'll bet the nut threads are stripped. It happened to me when I didn't have it seated properly before tightening. A new nut did the trick. Quote
DaveT63 Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 Thanks all! Think I might just say to hell with it and put a new driveshaft, clicking drag star, carbontex drag, new Tatula 100mm handle and nutplate set on it. Wasn't planning on spending that much, but the reel is a little beast when it is fixed properly, and it's still probably cheaper than replacing it. Dave Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 6, 2017 Super User Posted January 6, 2017 You should be able to see if the shaft threads are bad. The keeper for holding in the shaft has a screw that has locktight on it. Make sure you have good engagement as many have ruined the head and have had a hell of a time afterward. PM me for details if you want help before hand. Quote

If heat is needed heat the screwdriver tip and inert into screw head and let the heat transfer before turning. Just don't strip the head whatever you do. Be patient, it will come loose. Quote

I've literally had to take a tiny etching bit in a dremel to make a flat head slot in that tiny POS to get it out. Ruining that screw is kind of a right of passage. Quote
