Just wondering if any of you guys have any experience with the 6'8" Dobyns sierra casting rods?  I am looking to buy one for jerkbaits which I will start to fish a lot starting this february.  I lost my good jerkbait rod last year overboard and have held some friends dobyns rods and they always feel pretty good.  Plus it is always fun trying new stuff.  I am just wondering for vision 110s and pointer 100s which would be better in this particular rod the medium or medium heavy action?  Are the dobyns rods usually on the high end of the power rating or the low end.  For example I know that with my other rods St Croix is relatively stiff for its given action (medium seems more like a medium heavy.)  And my falcon rods are the exact opposite, they seem to be lighter than what their rating is.  I have no way of feeling the rods since no one around here sells dobyns.

Thanks.

You will love the Sierra rods. They are a half step lighter than they call for.  I would go for the SA683SF or if you want to throw a bit heavier ones the SA684SF.

Are you located anywhere near Greenville Marine 3600 Greenville Blvd.
Greenville, NC 27834. They are supposed to be a dealer for them.

I have fished with the Sierra 683 & 684 & as fishnkamp stated they are a tad lighter then stated. But for the lures you are want to use it for I would get the 682. You will find the better grade of cork used on the handle is a nice feature also. Good luck with your choice.

The 682 only comes in the Champion series (I believe). Further more, a 682 is not going to handle a 100 pointer at all, which weighs in at 5/8oz.

Back to the original question. I recently got a Sierra 735 for frogging and heavy jigs. The Sierra line has great quality and I would place it better than the previous Savy series, but not quite as good as the Champion. I'm impressed with it to the point that I'm also looking at picking up a 683 for light plastics applications, topwater, and small jerkbaits like the Pointer 78.

If you're going to be throwing the Vision 110 and Pointer 100's, I would recommend the 684.

I was leaning towards the 683 just from reading the ratings on the rod.  I will be using this as my primary topwater and jerkbait rod.  Thanks a lot for the responses they are much appreciated.

T/W sells a Sierra 682 & I would use it for the minnow style baits. I like some forgiveness when using treble hook baits. I don't own a 682 & if it is like the 683 & 684 a tad lighter then stated, 5/8oz. might be a little heavy. If that is the case I would look at a different brands medium action.

If it's a dedicated treble hook rod I would consider the Fury 705cb too.

This if you wanna save a couple bucks or jump to the 684 CB in the Champion line if it's gonna be exclusive to Ito110s. Plus you get the shorter length you were looking at. The 685 CB will work too especially if you would like to throw something bigger like a 115 Sammy or a magnum jerkbaits. The sierras are a tad slower taper than the Champions and Furys but not as much as getting a true Mod or Mod/Fast taper. Hope this helps.
