AhmedurRab Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Lets talk how fishing can help us both mentally and physically. Quote
Fun4Me Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Fishing allows me to mentally unwind from life, outside of fishing, that would otherwise make me want to get physical 3 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 You asked a question. The answer is "no", fishing is not just a recreational sport. For commercial fishermen, it's a way of making a living. 2 Quote
Burtonxj Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Fishing is usually the only time I can get my mind off of everything and I've got a hell of a lot on my mind these days. 2 Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted January 5, 2017 Super User Posted January 5, 2017 Well lets talk about this, I fish on several different levels. #1 I do it for a living at the moment. #2 I do it competitively #3 I do it recreationally sometimes as well. So the fact I fish for a living, the last thing on my mind on my days off is going out fishing the way I make a living (running and working on a charterboat here in S. Cal.) with 15-35 other people. Not the way I want to relax and spend my days off. Competitively, you have limited time and in tournaments and you're out to enjoy but the same time looking to hopefully make a check or rack up points, but then this is relaxing to me and lets me escape from everything that is going on in the outside world and tests my knowledge and skill to overcome with possible changing conditions. Recreational fishing is something I do when I have a couple hrs to get out and just go fishing and do with the kids (when I can get them off the electronics long enough). So the answer to your question for me is a no, fishing isn't just recreational. It's much more then that. 43 minutes ago, Bluebasser86 said: I'd love to have that in a bumper sticker. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted January 9, 2017 Super User Posted January 9, 2017 Being outside fishing enjoying what our Great Lord has created and not having to (for the most part) put up with life's bumps is very relaxing. Even small tourneys get the ol mind off of the "BS" of normal everyday life. Seriously...if you want to catch fish....concentrating on fishing is full time. Tinkering with all the fishing lures and tackle is also mind absorbing. I LOVE IT!! Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 9, 2017 Super User Posted January 9, 2017 Fishing is my "escape"................sometimes it feels like a job, but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else in my free time. No matter what is not going right in my life, I can always spend a little time fishing and it makes me feel better. And to be honest, many of the "problems" I have are not all that big in the grand scheme of things...........I mean my kids are happy, and healthy. We have food/shelter, an easier life than those that came before us, but it's nice just to get out on the water, and think about how to put a bass in the boat and forget what I have to do at work tomorrow, or what bills have to be paid. I truly feel blessed that I think this way, and feel bad for people who think life is all about money, work, 401K's, health insurance, paying debt, etc......we only get one spin on this rock, and I'll be danged if I am going to not go for the ride on my terms. 3 Quote
Super User whitwolf Posted January 13, 2017 Super User Posted January 13, 2017 Well said @ww2farmer ! As I have gotten older I have learned to appreciate many things while out on the water. The goal Is to catch fish and most days I reach that goal and a few days I don't. In the end I'm truly blessed to be able to do something I love to do and I refuse to take that for granted. I suppose , at least for me, It might be considered a recreational pursuit but It goes much deeper than recreation. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted January 14, 2017 Super User Posted January 14, 2017 Fishing to me is a challenge. I dont have a lot of time for trial and error so every trip with mostly an hour or two per trip I have to plan ahead what should I present to fish and with what technique. Most of the time I lost but when I win it makes a big smile out of my face. like my fishing buddy alway says the most anticipalte is the day before we go out fishing together(on a boat) since we will plan, prep and dream of catching big fish.
