looney4largemouth Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 For spinnerbaits and lipless cranks, would a 7' Heavy power, fast action rod be a reasonable option? What do you all think about these two presentations (Spinnerbaits and Rat l traps), on a worm/ jig rod with 15-17lb. mono? I'm considering mono, so that I can also throw horny toads and buzzbaits. Like I said, I'm looking for an all around rod for these few presentations. Considering the Dobyn's Fury lineup for this rod. Trying to stay around $100 or so. Your thoughts? Opinions? -Thanks in advance http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Dobyns_Fury_Casting_Rods/descpage-DFC.html Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 The Fury 704 or 705 would be a great rod for what you are looking for in the $100 range. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 Personally I'd prefer more of a medium heavy rather than a heavy. But I have fished all of those on a heavy before with the exception of a lipleess crank. 2 Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 The Dobyns Fury's are great rods. I would consider the FR 704C and the 705cb. They list those baits specifically for the 705cb, so maybe that is the best choice. Another great choice would be a Falcon Bucoo Micro 7 foot MH mf rod they call the Trap Caster. It specs for 1/4 to 3/4, has a nice tip and plenty of backbone. Falcon actually suggest trying larger cranks, spinnerbaits and even some buzzbaits. Personally it is one of my go to rattle trap rods. During fall you will find 4 rods with traps tied on but usually it is my Falcon Bucoo and an Irod Genesis that handle these duties. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 It depends on how "heavy" the power is and the size of the baits. If the rod will load and cast well you're good. Quote
Sammies77 Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Falcon bucoo 7' medium heavy moderate fast! An awesome rod for spinnerbaits and traps, and just about anything else you'd like to throw with it. Just stay away from the micro guide version, very low quality guides. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 I have fished my Falcon Bucoo micro for over 4 years and have had several guides that I had to carefully bend back in place but never had one break or have the insert pop out. Guess I have been lucky. I have the original guides on it. That rod does double duty for bass and fall stripers. It is a Trap Caster. I would go micro again if they held up like this one. Quote

That's the rod I was referring to, the trap caster. The regular version is cheaper and has fuji guides. The problem I had with the micro version was that the guides bent VERY easily. The also weren't straight at all with the blank from the factory. Quote
looney4largemouth Posted January 4, 2017 Author Posted January 4, 2017 Thanks for all of the input from you guys!! Quote
RichF Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 I don't know about traps on a jig/worm rod. The other 3 baits would be fine but the trebles would make me nervous. If you're good about adjusting your drag on the fly (like when you're fighting fish) you might be able to get away with it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 4, 2017 Super User Posted January 4, 2017 I throw traps prespawn, shallow on a 7' MH/F with 12# CXX. I use a fast rod so I can quickly detect when the bait ticks the tops of the new grass. The MH power helps rip it free, using sharp snaps that clear any leaves stick to the hooks. I feel like any H power rod would be too much for this. I'll even drop to a M/F if the weeds are sparse. The upside, both a M/F and MH/F are good for a TON of baits and styles. Both are a must have general purpose rod to have. Jump up to H/F, and it's uses narrow. Quote
