Mr. Bassin II Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 This may already be old news but I found some 4 inch TRDs and power finesse 1/5 oz. shroom heads at Bass Pro. Thinking the larger profile vs. the smaller size originals should entice the larger ones down here to bite. 2 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted January 2, 2017 Super User Posted January 2, 2017 My wife picked up some for me, I wouldn't have, but I am looking forward to trying them next year. I tried 1/2 a Zinkerz on a Charlie Brewer slider head around docks last year and did really well. The only downside was that there wasn't a lot of bait behind the hook. I think the big TRD will be the ticket for this next year. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted January 2, 2017 Super User Posted January 2, 2017 I'm sure the Big TRD will be great, but I'm probably going to stay with the Hula StickZ as my 4" Ned body. 2 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 Yea, that was my thought as well. I know I have posted this before, but a Hula stick on a 1/16th jig head with a wire keeper is a great bank beating lure. Fish it as normal until you have a missed strike, then quickly pull it off, rig it wacky, and throw it right back. They are just long enough to work like a flick-shake and once the salt washes out, they fall nice and slow on the weighted head. 1 Quote
Last_Cast Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I used the 3" TRD and killed it. Might try the bigger ones out this year. Quote

Im 100% with you in this. I don't really have any desire to fish the big TRD. Nothing about that says Ned Rig to me. If I want to go that route there are other, better options. Quote
ErikmonBillsfon Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Never used a Ned rig as I almost only fish muddy slime bottoms. I just got a bunch of fattyz. My question is has anyone ever cut an inch or 2 off the top of a fattyz and used it as a Ned rig with a slight different wiggle? I'd rather try a big TRD over the regular size but might try this first. Quote

It's become a very highly used modification by several Midwest Finesse anglers. Instructions per Ned: Quote Because the belly of the FattyZ possesses a molded-in hook slot, we could not trim two inches off its head to make it a three-inch bait. But we were able to convert it to a 2 1/2-inch bait by cutting 2 1/2 inches off the tail. -T9 3 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted January 11, 2017 Super User Posted January 11, 2017 Has anyone here tried to wacky rig the BigTRD? I've had some luck wacky rigging the hula sticks, but they only really give a good action once they've softened up a bunch. Quote

The big TRD should give me a bigger bait around docks with hopefully the same slow fall. Regarding calling it a Ned rig on the slider, well no, I see it as marrying two of the best finesse techniques for bass. Quote

I also caught fish on it on the river too. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Instead of buying the big TRD, just cut an inch off of the zinkerz if you want a four inch bait. Same shape and size as the big TRD, except softer and slower falling. Quote
tander Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I have been called lots of things but I have never been called a Ned Nerd. 1 Quote

I love the Zinkerz not only because you get 12 baits out of a pack, but the material just seems better, tougher and more porous, than the TRD. Since I have 2 packs of the Big TRD I will try them around docks and if that works I may cut the Zinkerz, or heck go with the full 5" bait on the slider and see how it goes. I see myself as more of a rebel, messing with the rig and my most popular bait not being a Zman product. 1 Quote

I haven't tried the big TRD or a four inch zinkerz, I just also prefer the zinkerz over the TRD so I figured a four inch zinkerz might work better. I bet they will work at times, but to me it really isn't a "Ned" rig, more like a shaky head/jig worm, but both have their places. 1 Quote

Agreed it isn't a Ned even the slider and 2.5" Zinkerz is something else, not sure what it should be called, but it to catches fish. I just like that type of weedless setup vs the wire weedguard on the Ned heads which hasn't worked for me with the local vegatation. 1 Quote
William Rossi Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Half of a 7" stickbait works well too Quote
