Alan Reed Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Need help determining which power, action and length rod to add. Current Rods: Abu Garcia Vendetta 6'6" Medium Fast baitcaster, this rod is on the stiffer end of Medium plan to use for lighter soft plastics. *** Black 7'1" Medium Fast baitcaster This Rod the power feels like a true Medium, plan to use this for moving baits, rattle traps squarebills, top water. Carbonlite 6'9" Medium Light Fast spinning Plan to use for light finesse lures. I want to add a heaveier rod to use with my new Lews 8.1-1 baitcaster for frogging, flipping, pitching, jigs. Should I go with medium heavy or heavy? Which action and length? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 2, 2017 Super User Posted January 2, 2017 7' MHF I think you should also consider a dedicated rig for treble hooks. Something like this: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/perfecta-lte.html 1 Quote

Should I go with medium heavy or heavy? Which action and length? Your Abu rod fishes like a mh. I'd be looking into a heavy/fast for what you listed. As you already know because of your Abu rod... just because it say heavy doesn't mean it will be a true heavy. Dobyns for example fish 1 power lighter than rated. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted January 2, 2017 Super User Posted January 2, 2017 I have a 7' 6" HF abu I used for frogs but it's more like a XHF pool cue. I do like it for frogging but if I had a rod for all of those I'd probably want a "true" heavy. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted January 2, 2017 Super User Posted January 2, 2017 You did not mention a budget but let me assume it is going to be around the price of your current rods. Go look at a Dobyns Fury FR 735C. That stick is well made, balances well and will feel good in your hand. The rod is perfect to frog, flip and pitch. It costs $110. Personally I use an original Veritas MH 7 footer. That rod rates for 1/4 to 1 ounce. As you already said Abus run on the heavier side. It handles frogs but if I had been aware of the Dobyns back then I would own the 735 1 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 If I was going Abu Id go 7-7'6"MHF.Other than that of say HF same length. My frog rod is a 1st get Veritas 7' MHF Quote
bigfruits Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 for the next rod id get a versatile 6'6"-7'2" MH/F for jigs, plastics, chatterbaits, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, swimjigs, paddletails with swimbait hooks or on jigheads and lipless in grass. 1/4oz frogs! after that would be a heavy rod for frogs, pitching to cover, small hard swimbaits or a MH/M crankbait rod if you like fishing medium and deep divers. squarebills and shallow cranks should be fine on your M/F. IndianaFinesse Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Get a medium heavy fast action rod, around 7' long. A heavy has a more limited range of techniques. If you get another Abu Garcia rod, I would reccomend getting a rod that is one power lower than what you want, my medium heavy Abu Garcia vigilante fishes more like heavy, so it's almost sole use is frogging. Onvacation Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 7'3" MH F is a sweet spot for me with everything you suggested except frogs. I prefer a bit more length there. I have two of them set up with 8.1:1 Tatulas so I think you are on the right track in my eyes. I've got an extra brand new Black if your interested for a good price if you are happy with your current medium. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 7, 2017 Super User Posted January 7, 2017 I don't know about where you live, but right now Academy Sports is running their end of season close out sale and there are some fishing rod bargains to be had. In their house brand, I very recently bought a 7'6" one piece flipping stick for $20. I talked myself out of a 7' MH for $30 and a 6'6" Med for $30. In the low to mid-range offerings of All Star rods in stock, they had a Med 6' top water rod and a 7' ML Popping rod. (These were all bait casting rods). They had some spinning rods on sale also. The sale goes on until the 21st and maybe/probably when I drop by there next week I'm more than likely to get another rod - probably the popping rod and I don't know exactly what I'd use it for but it would be good to have a popping rod. Walmart close outs generally happen the end of January and in the past I've come across some decent jig rods at very good prices. Might want to wait and see what they're going to discount this year.
