Deeare Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 What's your price range? You looking for casting or spinning rods? What brands do you already own? Quote

I found out when my line snapped after setting hook into a good size bass. So always inspect before you buy This is a very good point. As long as you look stuff over, you should be ok. Quote

But I have a medium lite villian also, and it casts 1/16 ounce Ned rigs a good distance with ease. Is that total weight? Because I was using a 1/16 oz. Roostertail, and I couldn't get any distance to speak of. 1 Quote

I needed a rod that I could take on the small boat that would be able to do multiple things and that rod works, it is a little stiffer than a traditional medium but it works great for larger jerkbaits as well as spinnerbaits and believe it or not, the sensitivity is good enough for me to use with jigs and soft plastics. My main use for that stick was spinnerbaits but it had enough feel for me to throw 5" Senkos on it, and I'm sure the new versions are as good if not better. If that stick is in your price range I'd think about that, the performance of my older model is well above the price point. Quote

With the zinker on it probably weighs closer to 1/8 ounce, but that's just a guess. It definitely fishes stiffer than a medium lite fast action, more like a medium powered extra fast action rod. Super User lmbfisherman Posted January 3, 2017 Super User Posted January 3, 2017 My experience is I wish I would've started buying the better reels earlier, especially casting. When I first started out I bought a crappy reel, turned me off from using them. If I started off buying the mid to higher end reels I would've figured out what I was missing. The only thing I'd recommend never to buy was Berkeley Vanish floro, I broke off so many fish with that line. 1 Quote

And my Dad, wanted them despite all the native things said about them. The newer wild wild series are very light, sensitive rods. I like them a lot for their sensitivity. However, they break. Plain and simple. Their return policy is pretty darn good and you can get a second rod for like $30-50 bucks. SO every year when I break one, I end up getting a second. What started as one rod is now 8+ rods. However, it takes several months to get the new rods. If you have an arsenal like me and can wait, it works out. If you only have a few rods, then I suggest going with st croixs which are close to the sensitivity of carrot sticks, and a greta deal more durable. Quote

What brands do you already own? i have quite a few i'm happy with ... snapped a halo daylight into shredded wheat on a hookset ... other than that, i've been lucky to get good rods.... due to reviews and forums like this helping me research before buying ... i'm looking for both spinning and casting ... right now i have a long lists of possible brands to try - i'm interested in hearing people's input on what they feel that they wouldn't buy based on personal experience... i realize that good rods inevitably have a lemon every now and then, like the dobyns savvy i broke trying to get loose from a snag on the bottom - i may have damaged the rod before that happened, dont know - but i'm going to return it for another , and would buy more from him ... i don't lock myself into a price, more so a good value ( bang for the buck ) i'm willing to spend a couple bills, just not on something that people can tell me to be wary about, which is what i'm asking Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 4, 2017 Super User Posted January 4, 2017 I cannot help and from my seat I'm glad of that. Nothing but good with my St. Croix's and Shimano's. Quote

He was too busy to take me out. He nonetheless sent me a gift box of autographed photos, books, hats, spices. Easily $150+ worth of free gear. Pretty classy act, in my opinion. Quote
