What do you guys think of the daiwa exceller?  Can it handle lighter lures down to at least 1/4 ounce?  I was thinking of using it mostly for jerkbaits and topwater.

Posted

Absolutely; this season I picked up a new Procyon 2500 and started using my 2000 Exceler on my UL and it worked like a charm. During the season I was throwing jerkbaits like an X-Rap in size 8 and topwaters like small 1/4oz poppers without any issue.  Make sure you match it with a lighter rod like a ML and ensure that your line matches your setup as well. I went with 20lbs braid and 8lbs fluro leader but that was too heavy for the smaller lures, so I'd go with maybe 15lbs braid and 6lbs leader or perhaps just straight 8 or 6lbs mono if that's what you choose to run.

Cheers, Attila

From his post on the Daiwa Aird, I would say the OP is asking about the casting reel, not the spinning reel.

OP, see my post in your other thread.

Yeah, with Daiwa you need to state whether you're
talking spinning or casting since they name series
the same...

Not you, people sometimes forget to specify. I've made
the same "error" you have not knowing which was being
referred to.

I will answer it this way I have a friend Bryan that got me hooked on Daiwa, He fishes at least 3 to 4 times a week HARD!  He has his own website called baybass.com. Go spend some time reading his fishing reports that always include equipment used. He fishes almost all Daiwa, Excelers, Tatula 100 series and Tatula HD 200 series reels. I have used his gear, and now I own 7 Daiwas which include 1 Exceler, 4 Tatula Type Rs and 2 Tatula CTs. Before the summer I will upgrade all of my reels to Excellers and Tatulas. If ai had you cast all of my reels and you could not see which one is which you can not tell in casting distance or smoothness, in my opinion. The Exceler handle fine, it is a $99 retail reel currently available for $60. The Tatula CTs can e had for roughly $100 shipped to your door.  You will not be disappointed with either. Another good option is the Fuego for about the CTs price.

@IndianaFinesse, I have (well, one of my sons now) a Lexa casting
reel and it is quite nice. Casts light baits, etc. It is very similar to
the Exceler except, I believe, for a few bearings.

I think for jerks and tops you should be ok with it...but I can't be
100% certain.  I believe @ww2farmer has used/uses Excelers?

Maybe he can chime in.

Thanks, and sorry I forgot to specify that I was talking about the casting model.  Nd thanks for mentioning the longevity, that's an important thing to me because of the amount i fish.  I think I'm going to pick up one of them on sale tomorrow.

I can tell you I had one problem with my Lexa, the
anti-reverse pawl. It got mangled on a few casts.

I was able to straighten it with some pliers and it
works fine now.

Just mention as a FWIW. I read in some other forum
of this being an issue in some Lexa models. Heck if
I can remember what forum now as that was a couple
years ago and I never bookmarked it....

Excellent reels.........at least the casting. They make up a good portion of my casting reel arsenal. I have several of them that are going into there 4th season of hard use, and have been bullet proof with nothing more than normal maint.

Here is the type of "abuse" my friend Bryan's equipment must endure

Potomac%207%201%2016%20snakehead%201_0.png

That fish was caught on a Lexa, It weighed nearly 14 pounds! Not much left of the spinnerbait.

Take a few minutes and read his fishing report here  http://www.baybass.com/node/268 It is worth the read and best of all it was delicous he says.  All of his Lexa, Exceler, and Tatulas have to stand up to these snakeheads, bass, stripers up to around 36 inches and big blue cats. My biggest cat so far was a 18 pound blue. That fish nearly doubled over an Irod 7 foot medium mod rod and almost spooled my Tatula before my partner got the trolling motor up and I could work the rod around the front of the boat.

When you say "excellent reels, at least the casting..." have you had any other problems with them?

Sounds like it holds up quite well for all of the abuse he puts it through.  I fish 4-7 days a week, so my equipment has to be pretty durable to last very long .

No..............it just means I have not used the spinning reels. I only have, and have used the current generation of casting reels (the black ones, not the earlier silver/grey ones)

Oh, I figured you meant that casting as in casting a lure.  Thanks!

The only Diawa reel I currently own is an Exceller that is use on my topwater setup. I have been very impressed with it for its price (got mine on sale for $60). I would not hesitate to recommend it.

That's what it's on sale for now, but I was really hoping and thinking that it was going to be an additional 25% off today, bringing it down to a no-brainer at only $45.  Oh well, I will probably pick it up anyways.  I'll try to remember to come back and post a review once I've had a few weeks of fishing with it.  I'll have to wait a while to try it out, the lakes are going to be iced up around here for a while.

Well, I just got my exceller.  It is less than smooth, every turn or two of the reel handle it hits a rough spot.  I tried taking it apart and oiling it, and that helped a little, but it still has rough spots. Is this normal for the exceller?
