Super User Spankey Posted February 3, 2022 Super User Posted February 3, 2022 Guys just throwing this song out there for ya. Woke up at 4:30 for work and when my feet hit the floor “Powderfinger” by Neil Young popped in my head. I’m a big fan. My early days were full of him and a lot of Jimi Hendrix. Still to this day. The river rat that I am “Powerfinger” has always been a favorite. Pull it up, crank it up and play a live version of it. Just a thought. 1 Quote
Chris Catignani Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 @Spankey I with you on that...I'm a huge Niel Young fan...but for the life of me I can seem to get my head around him taking his music off Spotify...all because of a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience. I'd like to think that we can make up our own minds on news and such. Hell ...as fishermen we have to deal with lies all the time...about products and fishing reports. Joe Rogan is notorious for having guests from the mainstream and then from alternativerse. So now we have singers, who were once the biggest proponent of civil and human rights (Joni Mitchell too), flip-flopping on the right for free speech. Not a Joe Rogan listener...and I am pro vax. What am I missing? 3 Quote

If I’m not mistaken Neil Young had a good relationship with LS., I could be wrong but I believe Neil served the song Powderfinger to LS to have, I can see them doing it. But the plane crash put and end to that. My facts could be wrong but I believe I heard this years ago at a NY show. I did see some great Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse Shows between 1978 - early 90’s. Super User J Francho Posted February 3, 2022 Super User Posted February 3, 2022 Artists deeply dislike Spotify due to very low earnings. I think if they can tack on some moral grounds to jump ship, then it presents less PR issues. The optics of leaving Spotify on these grounds are not nearly as damaging as say the whining Metallica spews about streaming services. 1 Quote

The optics of leaving Spotify on these grounds are not nearly as damaging as say the whining Metallica spews about streaming services. OK...I can get my head around that. From Promoly: Quote Despite nearly a million streams per minute, Spotify only pays out $0.006 to $0.0084 per stream. Worse, this revenue is paid directly to the music holder, and this means the royalties are often split between artists, writers, music producers, and their record labels. This makes it much harder for new artists to earn a living from Spotify. While Taylor Swift may be one of the most prominent artists globally, she too took up the cause against Spotify when she pulled nearly all her music from the platform in 2014. Swift called out the platform for directly cutting into paid album sales. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 3, 2022 Super User Posted February 3, 2022 The Taylor Swift story is an interesting deal. Quote

Yes, the Neil Young line in the "Alabama" song is not a shot at Young at all. They loved Neil Young. Anyone interested should look it up because I thought the same thing until a few years ago. 1 Quote

Also, neither Neil Young nor Spotify are the government, though invoking the First Amendment is certain to get some sort of emotional response. It also borders on political. The way I see it, Neil Young's right to speak about why he did what he did is protected, just as Joe Rogaine (whatever his name is) has a right to air what he wants. That doesn't mean there aren't consequences if you say dumb things. This ends here, and now. No political discussions are tolerated. 1 Quote

The lines from Sweet Home Alabama" were a response to Niel Youngs song Southern Man from After the Gold Ruch ... a song about racism in the South. I saw cotton And I saw black Tall white mansions And little shacks Southern man When will you Pay them back? Niel Young would go on to later regret his lyrics...from his biogrophy Waging Heavy Peace "I don’t like my words when I listen to it. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, and too easy to misconstrue." 1 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted February 4, 2022 Super User Posted February 4, 2022 Music ……To each his own. Whatever makes you feel good or bad I guess depending on mood. Mostly good in my case. Brings back great memories. My music taste has never really changed much since the 70’s other than artist I picked up along the way that I like. It’s cool to try to figure out the message or story behind a lot of tunes but I’m happy with just my interpretation or meaning. 2 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 4, 2022 Super User Posted February 4, 2022 Neil Young was relevant 40 years ago. Not so much today. I saw him live in the 80's. Took my then girlfriend, now ex-wife to the show. She was a fan and I found his music tolerable. It was at an outdoor venue and I bought lawn seats rather than pavilion seats. It was raining so she and I took some open seats in the last row of the pavilion. A guy walks up to us and hands us a pair of promotional tickets that were front row center and said "Have a nice evening" Neil young has always been political. My beef with a lot of musicians and their live shows is, I paid to see them perform music, not listen to political rants. If I want to listen to politics I'll turn on talk radio. 2 Quote
