Super User the reel ess Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Do you guys use a specific reel just for lipless cranks? Is it a higher line capacity reel? What's your preferred retrieve ratio? I'll be replacing mine soon. Quote
smr913 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I use a 50 size Shimano with 30# PP. I mostly throw smaller traps in the 1/4oz range. If I were to throw 1/2oz and larger I would opt for a 200 size reel since you can really bomb them. 1 Quote
npl_texas Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Dobyn's Fury 705CB Sorry read that wrong and thought you were asking about rods I throw mine on a Lew's Tourney MB 6.8:1 1 Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 You can certainly cast lipless cranks a long way so you wouldn't want to use a reel that was "line capacity challenged" ! I don't use a single reel for lipless cranks because I don't always fish them the same way. If I'm burning a lipless over grass and/or skinny water, I'm using a higher IPT reel. If I'm slow-rolling them deep, I'll use a slower IPT. However, if I had to pick a single ratio - I'd pick one giving about 26 IPT as a compromise. 5 Quote
wdp Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I use a Curado 7:1 gear ratio. Some days they want it burned with a stop & go, so the higher gear ratio helps. When they want it slower or popped off the bottom, you can still slow down with this reel. Its a 200 size reel. I use it for all my lipless cranks, 1/4 & 1/2. Only time I change is when I use my ultralight to throw 1/8 oz. 2 Quote

I was thinking I'd like to have another because I have yet to backlash it. And they make one with a higher capacity spool. I have a 6-6 M rod to get me by for a while. I'll probably replace with a 7 footer someday. Quote

RedHeadAngler Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 I use my Shimano Citica g which is a 7.1:1 and it works fine. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted December 31, 2016 Super User Posted December 31, 2016 If you are looking at adding a really nice ( read moderately priced) combo look at a Falcon Bucoo Micro Trap caster. It is listed as a 7foot medium moderate rod. I would consider it to be just a tick faster, for me it handles my traps really well, but also some larger deeper diving cranks. Mine is matched up with a 6.3-1 Daiwa Tatula CT. it works well for me. Sometimes the Bucoos can be found for less than $50 online. It retails for $100. 1 Quote

I purchased a used Trion that came spooled with a light braid. Figured it would work well with the unweighted worms I fish with when visiting Florida since the spool spun so freely when the cluctch was disengaged. Have a Medium Compre I keep there so I used that rod with the Trion. Was a backlashing machine. Sent it to Mike for a cleaning. He was able to cast some fairly light lures with it after the cleaning, but suggested I go with heavier line and lures. Spooled on 17# mono, mounted it on a 6'10" HF Tour Edition, and haven't backlashed it once since then. 1 Quote
crypt Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 I use a 24 year old Abu Pro MAX 1600 that has been geared up to 6.3-1 . small in size but a beast of a reel. 1 Quote

bigfruits Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 Lipless cranks dont have much resistance. I try to use a faster (and smaller) reel when i can get away with it. I'd go 7.x:1 for lipless cranks. I dont find it hard to slow it down when I want to present the bait slower. Only time I go down to 6.x:1 is for medium depth cranks or baits with a lot of resistance. I dont crank deep enough to justify the purchase of a 5.x:1. 1 Quote
DaveT63 Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 For some reason, I prefer to throw lipless baits on a spinning combo. I don't really know why, but I do. I am currently using a Shimano Symetre 3000FL and love it for that purpose. Dave 1 Quote

I have a Trion Spinning reel and a 7' M Lightning Rod I'll sometimes use for treble lures. It's interesting to me that a M spinning rod blank would likely be a ML BC rod blank. Quote

Identical to my Black Max 1600C except for its crappy finish and more bearings. Very capable of throwing light weights even in some pretty high winds. Line capacity is a little low, but plenty enough for bass fishing as long has line diameter isn't too big. I need to change the gears in mine to the 6.3....if they are still available. I bet with 12# line you can about spool it with a lipless crank. Mine came with light braid. I use 8# mono on my 1600 Morrums. Fun reels. 1 Quote
crypt Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 part # for gears are 22222 and 22221 for both main and pinion gears. also have 5 black max's also. love em. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 1, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 1, 2017 I've been using a Pflueger President 7.3 and most recently a KastKing Assassin which is a 6.3. Neither are large capacity reels bit they both do the job well. 1 Quote
scbassin Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I have been using a Shimano Metanium 7:1.1 but this year it will be a Shimano Metanium XG 8:5.1. I believe in fishing those baits fast. When the water is warming up in the spring they will catch it, they will react to it. 1 Quote

They like them as slow as you can reel them and keep them off the grassy bottom. You have to just about put it in their mouths. But I still like a fast reel for it because it's fewer cranks per day.
