ErikmonBillsfon Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Anyone use these new trapper tackle hooks. They seem like they could be a game changer but look very odd. I hate to readjust my stanley ribbit frog, fluke, or keitech swimbait. When you catch a few fish the hook usually tears the plastic and makes a channel that the hook will then slide down and be up off the back of the lure. Instead of laying flat on the lures back weedless, maybe a lil tex posed the hook is up and looks like a open hook jig that will get snagged on the very weedy places I fish. This hook design looks promising as it will keep the lure pinned and the hook flush with the plastic. Maybe I'm over thinking it and maybe the two 90° turns in the hook bend will end up tearing the plastic more. But i feel like it's worth some testing. Also the company seems to say it will keep the fish pinned a lot better than a normal hook and almost eliminates loss of fish after hook set. Also if this came in a twist lock, belly weighted version I feel like it would be awesome for swimbaits. Anyone care to share a review, hopefully this isn't some weird gimmick. Quote
CenCal fisher Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I signed up to get a free sample back when I cast was going on and haven't received them yet . I think it's a gimmick that won't gain popularity. 1 Quote
KDW96 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Seems like you would loose more larger fish. I just dont get the space behind the barb? Might work great for keeping your bait from sliding down, but not so much for actually landing a good size fish. But thats just my opinion:) Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Before I say gimmick, I want to give them a toss. They definately thought outside of the box and came up with something different. I am guessing that the first offset worm hooks were seen as a gimmick too. To me different doesn't mean gimmick, could be, but could also be innovation. I signed up for the freebie as well and will pick up a pack to try when I do my next TW order. 1 Quote
ErikmonBillsfon Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 Ya I get the same feeling of a gimmick and while it might keep the lure in place it also might tear it easier when it gets pushed through the 90° turn a hookset. But it did win icast2016 best terminal tackle foe what ever that's worth and on the video on TW it shows it catching big peacock bass and snook. It's also hard to test now as I'm in CT so if any of you southern guys get to try it let us know. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 First - I've not used any of these hooks. The eye ball assessment seems to indicate as a drop shot hook it may have some benefits but the wire looks a little thick for my liking though admittedly it's tough to tell from just a picture. However, for any other soft plastic presentation, the Lack of hook gap makes me nervous. Previous models I've tried, that had little to no gap, have failed miserably. That space in needed to offer the plastic a place to go - and be clear for an effective hook set. This one is advertised to solve a problem that currently - I do not have. A-Jay 1 Quote

Jaderose Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 I'll let you guys try it out before I pull the trigger. I got some Lunker City Texposer hooks a couple of years thinking it would be a better mousetrap. Nope......HATED those hooks. They got hung on EVERYTHING. Gave them away Quote
CenCal fisher Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I received an email today asking me to pick what hooks I want and to confirm my shipping address. I chose 4/0 wide gap worm hooks. I'll let you guys know if the are the next big thing or a gimmick. Quote
S. Sass Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Seems like a gimmick to me as well. But that being said it won't matter. The majority of fishermen have their hooks and unless some pro starts winning the bassmaster and other pros follow they won't ever overtake Gammy, Owner, Mustad, Trokar or whatever brand everyone has already went to bed with. CenCal fisher Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 My sample pack came in the mail today, I received two 4/0 standard gauge offset wide gap hooks. I'll fish them tomorrow but so far I'm not that impressed. Out of the package the hooks aren't that sharp. I should be able to drag the hook over my fingernail with light pressure and the hook should scratch or stick in my nail. Out of the package these hooks don't do this. My sister who doesn't know enough about fishing to know what makes a hook good or not picked one up as I was looking at them and the first thing she said was "these things aren't even sharp" 1 Quote

Fishingmickey Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Howdy y'all, Well there is a sucker born everyday said WC Fields. Pass me the lollipops please. I bought three packages of the hooks from TW and test fired them last weekend. Caught probably 7-8 fish on them. used them as a worm hook on a 7" and 10" power worms. The 7" was Texas rigged and the 10" Carolina rigged. I used the 4/0 standard size for the 7" and 5/0 heavy gauge size for the 10" worms. So far they have batted 100% bite vs hooked up and landed. They aren't gammy sticky sharp but the point is narrow and kinda of long, All fish swung on were well hooked. Fishingmickey Quote
ScottK91 Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I just received my sample pack of drop shot hooks I haven't tried them out yet but will give them a shot someday. They look like they might hold a nose hooked bait pretty well but I'm not sure about how they will hold a fish. Quote
NorthwestBasser Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I won a pack of the dropshot hooks in a drawingat my monthly club meeting. I haven't tied one in yet but just playing around with them, I don't like 'em. Now maybe I'll fish with them and do great, but even still I doubt I'll be replacing my usual lip stickers with these. They do seem to hold a nose hooked roboworm/dreamshot and half shell in place really well. The company claims they will hold a fish just as well, I have my doubts. I don't feel like there is enough room in the gap. Also, I was curious how difficult or odd it would be say, baiting a plastic on the larger hooks Texas rigged. My good friend posted a review on YouTube doing just this and it was no trouble at all. But will they hook and hold a fish? Ice out is upon us, so I'll know soon!! Quote
