Kidflex Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Pitching jigs or dbombs into buckbrush! Something about close quarters combat that gets me going 2 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted December 29, 2016 Super User Posted December 29, 2016 Larger surface lures or a frog gets the blood pumping the most. My second favorite is wacky rig. 1 Quote
Will Wetline Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 My vote goes to a Super Fluke Jr. for pre spawn smallies in clear water. Love to see them agitated by this bait and then smash it! 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted December 29, 2016 Super User Posted December 29, 2016 Throwing a Rapala Skitter Walk on a foggy morning before the sun is up is as good as it gets for me. 2 Quote
UPSmallie Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Frogs usually take me by surprise the most. Most exciting topwater for pike and smallmouth for me has been the one knocker. Whether pike or smallie, they smash it as hard as I've ever seen a fish slam a bait. I've had to change out twisted split-rings and mangled hooks. I enjoy the bite marks on the paint though. 1 Quote
wdp Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Buzz frogs for me, Ribbit or Horny Toad. When they're busting on that bite, nothing more fun. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 It's all good. Whatever puts a tug on the line any given time is my favorite (at thevtime). 2 Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Slow rolling a Keitech swing impact fat and getting that thump, THUMP! A whopper plopper is fun just listening to the babbling baby meets 2 stroke sound. Finally a deep Carolina Rig when you set the hook and think, "d**n, snag" (big head shake) "oh not snagged." 3 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 I feel that I should preface with a lesson I learned many years ago, a lesson I'll never forget: Based purely on dumb luck, I found myself smack dab in the middle of a red-hot topwater bite. At the time, I was throwing a Stanley Ribbit and was getting action on every cast, sometimes 2 or 3 strikes during a single retrieve. It quickly hit me that this was a golden opportunity to experiment. I had about a half-dozen different types of topwaters in my tackle box, and I fished them all. As it happened, 'EVERY' topwater I threw produced action, virtually on every cast (Strikes, not bass). Then after about 20 minutes of pure ecstasy, the bottom dropped out and the action fizzled. Although I continued to throw all the same lures, and utilize all the same retrieves, I wasn't able to raise a single bass with any lure...Nada! That was a lesson of a lifetime I'll never forget. Anyway, with that in mind, my favorite topwater lures include but are not limited to: > Rapala Original Floater > Cavitron Buzzbait > Stanley Ribbit (solid toad) > Bronzeye Hollow Frog Roger 2 Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 For me, nothing beats seeing a big bucketmouth basss jump out of the water to destroy my topwater like it was a great white shark after a seal. 4 Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Jitterbug may not be the most productive bait but 19 minutes ago, soflabasser said: For me, nothing beats seeing a big bucketmouth basss jump out of the water to destroy my topwater like it was a great white shark after a seal. dwh4784 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Hollow body topwater for me as well. My favorite is a white LiveTarget field mouse. The bass I caught on it this last year absolutely destroyed it, I caught all of them (great hooks), and I actually saw a white mouse running around in the lily pads one day so to me that just adds to the realism factor. I fish a lot of different topwater stuff, but that mouse I just get the feeling every cast that it's going to be annihilated. Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Total darknest of a New Moon night & any lure will get your adrenalin flowing! 2 Quote
William Rossi Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I had fun last year with the Spro Rats. Fish hit them HARD. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 It's great moving the Pop-r along making it splash, and then seeing that bigger splash as a bass takes the bait under. 1 Quote
Maico1 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 This year it was the Pagani Siglett and Grand Siglett......really brought the "Brown Ones" up to the surface. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 You cant jump logs with most topwaters . A buzzbait excels at it. I had a bass jump clear over a log one time , followed my Lunker Lure over . That was a hit . 1 Quote
"hamma" Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Conditions dictate what topwater I throw. But,. for me? early am, on prime smallie water. When that topwater just barely gets sucked under, tells me its a nice one. When they hit like a freight train? its "usually" a cookie cutter,..I say usually,.. as sometimes a pig will hit hard. But not often. That vicious topwater hit is the bomb, and can get anyones heart a pumpin. But when I see that bait get lightly sucked under? My heart skips a beat, time seems to stop, as well as breath, and the evident hookset gives me new clues, still breatheless, I evaluate the weight on the end of the line, loosen my drag just a bit so it doesnt break off, I finally breathe again, anticipating the ensuing battle. Whatever is on the line, does matter to me, but,.. its that lightly disappearing lure thats the ticket for me. 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted December 30, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 30, 2016 Was a frog, but now it's the Live Target Sunfish. Fish it the same way but they love that sunfish laying on it's side sliding back and forth. There's nothing better than throwing any hollow bodied top water into the belly of the beast and anticipating what kind of monster might bust the surface and grab it. Then reeling in a bunch of weeds not knowing what's underneath, it's like Christmas every time. Usually turns out to be a tiny bass but hey it's fun no matter what! 3 Quote
Yudo1 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 For me, there's nothing more fun than a frog in the pads. Work it into the openings and some days you can almost predict the bite. Quote
