Mocktopus Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I have a go to lure. It is a large black jitterbug with a rattle I use it in the evening through the night and early morning. My 3 best bass have been caught on this lure. My question is, why doesn't it seem to get much play professionaly? At least I haven't ever seen a pro throw one. I know there are many topwater lures and I use various jigs and jerks, but if fishing is slow I will be throwing that jitterbug. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted December 27, 2016 Super User Posted December 27, 2016 Guys use them, but they may not talk about it. I will agree with you that the Jitterbug does produce fish, and quality one's at that. One down fall of the bait is that it must be fished slow and hookups aren't the greatest for a treble hooked lure. 2 Quote
Turtle135 Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I know the Rhode Island state record largemouth bass was caught earlier in 2016 on the Arbogast Magnum Jitterbug. That does seem to be good presentation for big bass in the evening and at night. It might not get much play with the tournament crowd as many of the higher profile tournaments are morning into early afternoon events. Also, if you go to Arbogast Lures website I did not see any "Pro's" on staff. So likely no one is getting paid to promote that line of lures on BASS or FLW. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 27, 2016 Super User Posted December 27, 2016 Welcome to the BR site. Your post may get moved to fishing tackle forum because it's a lure question. Big jitterbug can be the magnum 5/8 oz 3" oz 2 hook model or XL musky 4 1/2" 1 1/4oz 3 hook model. There is a underground group of jitterbug anglers who modify these lures for trophy bass. Tom Any idea how they modify them ? I already have caught nice bass on them... With nothing but swapping the hooks... Quote

Adding a straight plastic worm for a rat tail using a small screw eye and Owner CPS spring is another popular mod on the bigger Jitterbugs. Tom 4 Quote

frogflogger Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 A lot of trophy bass have been caught on the musky-sized - they rubber band the side hooks so they are up and either cut one barb off the rear treble or a big single hook this can be fished over weed beds very effectively. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 1, 2017 Global Moderator Posted January 1, 2017 I've had one of the musky sized one for years. The first time I fished it at my friends pond his dad was right in the middle of making fun of my "beer can with treble hooks", until a 5 pounder crushed it next to a weedline. 3 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 1, 2017 Super User Posted January 1, 2017 I caught my PB on a 5/8 ounce jitterbug right before 6 AM on a hot still morning. Cast it out and let it sit until water around it was calm. When I twitched it the bass hit. 1 Quote
