Puggz Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 As a followup to my post on the best gear ratio for a Med. power crankbait rod (casting) now I'm faced with even more options (1st world problems abound!) Please help me choose the reel and line so I can get shopping :-D The rod is a EBC71C and its primary use will be small (1/4 oz) jerks, topwaters, sq bills, scatter raps, and rattle traps. Reel short list: Shimano Aldebaran 50 Daiwa Alphas Air 5.8:1 Shimano Stile 5.8:1 Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG 6.5:1 I believe my short list is the Alphas Air or the BFS XG. Convince me otherwise! TIA! Super User NHBull Posted December 27, 2016 Super User Posted December 27, 2016 You are asking a lot from one set up. Given rattle traps are in the mix, I would look at the 6.5 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted December 27, 2016 Super User Posted December 27, 2016 I would skip the Alphas Air and the get the Alphas SV 105. 1 Quote
Gavin.Ange Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 The stile or aldebaran 50 would be your best bet. I own the BFS 6:5:1 and the line capacity is veryyyyy low. And there's nothing wrong with that... I just don't think that reel would be suit for your applications. Quote

I'm thinking about 12lb Kanzen (3lb diameter). 6 hours ago, kickerfish1 said: I would skip the Alphas Air and the get the Alphas SV 105. Why? Quote

I'm thinking about 12lb Kanzen (3lb diameter). Why? I believe the Alphas Air holds about 55 yards of 8# mono. Is this is enough line for you? The Alphas SV105 holds 90 yards of 12# mono and will handle that lure weight very well. EDIT: Just noticed you will be using 3# equivalent, so the Air will hold plenty of line for you provided it will work on a casting reel. Never heard of anyone going that small of a diameter on a casting reel. Let us know how it works out for you. Quote

It holds a whopping 55 yards of 6 lb line according the JapanTackle. Unless you plan on using extremely light line this is NOT the reel for you. The Alphas SV is more of a mag finesse reel. Perfect for baits just under a 1/4 oz up to anything in that 1/2 oz range. Based upon the weight of baits you have noted between 1/4 and 3/8 it would be far more ideal than the Alphas Air. Plus the SV 105 is about $80 cheaper. Like I noted in a previous post the Alphas SV 105 stock is the best 1/4 oz hard bait casting reel I have ever used. Quote

It is sort of a personal preference. I have mine spooled with 8# Yozuri Hybrid. It is a tiny bit larger in diamter then some other brands but the breaking strength is quite high. It allows me to fish topwaters, cranks, and jerkbaits alike on the same outfit. Quote
Puggz Posted December 29, 2016 Author Posted December 29, 2016 Done! thanks everyone. Its a Alphas SV with 8lb Yo 2 Quote
