Big-Bass Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Can anyone compare the performance of either or both of these reels? I know the T3 was considerably more expensive when it was released about five years ago, but as technology has improved, how does the Tatula CT Type-R compare? Thanks! Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted December 26, 2016 Super User Posted December 26, 2016 It may be tough to find someone that has used both those exact reels. I can offer up my experience though I only have an older Tatula 7:3.1 and the Silver T3 1016. The T3s as a whole feature brilliant casting distance but are not the type of reel you want to be using for resistance baits like heavy cranks and spinnerbaits. I use mine as a frogging reel with braid for the 3 months or so when the frog bite is on. Really works well for this type of thing for me anyway. Some may not like the 'clunk' sound of the hood mechanism and the short handle on them. I bought mine essentially new for $160. For that price it was a good deal. The Tatula is a more beefed up reel and great for everyday apps and resistance baits alike. Plus they can be found new much cheaper and the newer CT tat has a smaller frame and great performance from what I hear. Unless you are intrigued by Mag 3d breaking, the original T wing concept, and the lure of a hood that pops up when you cast I would probably say the CT Tat would serve you just fine. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted December 27, 2016 Super User Posted December 27, 2016 I've used both and still have one of each. The 1016 and 3d braking are amazing but that's about as far as it goes. thankfully I was able to offload 2 of my 3 1016s but I've had to replace gear sets, drive shafts, and broken hoods on mine. I now have a small chip in a pinion gear on the T3 that I own that will need to be replaced and have no idea how it got there. Hasn't been opened since the spring and the gears were new then. I've tried using extra penn grease in the reel but I just have had poor luck /w the 1016. Resale value for the 1016 is at an all time low, too. You're going to be lucky getting 130(ish) for them new. Despite that, when working, they are a fantastic reel with a strong following. Lots of people have no issues with them so I may be just unlucky. I would take the Tatula CT every time. Quote
Kidflex Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I have both and they are both great reels in their own right. The t3 palms better than any reel I've used. Amazing casting performance too. The ct type r is overall a great performer. The t3 is more fragile (hood) so take that into consideration. Quote
