I hit up cabelas today and looked at the rod I am going to get. Ugly stick elite 7 ft medium action. There was a 1 piece and a 2 piece the 1 piece seemed thicker. I liked the 2 piece because of thinness. but I hate when 2 piece rods come apart during cast. Transportation isn't an issue  but the 1 piece is thicker though. What I'm trying to say is the 1 piece is thicker but it won't come apart during cast. The 2 piece seems thinner but can come apart, break easier and also not as sensitive. Also this is the rod I want so don't recommend rods please.

I fish a couple of 2 piece rods and if you put them together properly then they should never come apart on a cast nor be that difficult to get apart.  Several of my 2 piece rods are made by G Loomis and cost upwards of $250.  I use them with light baits for river smallies.

Why would the 1 piece be thicker though it seems like it would be the opposite

I just took a look at Cabelas online.. It looks like the Elite series is not available in two pieces. So most likely you were comparing a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Elite 1 piece 7 foot medium and a two piece Shakespeare GX2 series 7 foot medium rod. If I am correct you are comparing apples to oranges which would explain the difference in the blanks.

Push the 2 pieces together harder and it won't come off when you cast

I use a 7' ML Elite for both salt and freshwater and they're great rods, but I think Fish is right. There shouldn't be a significant difference in thickness between a 1 and 2 piece rod. However, there is a significant difference in thickness between the Elites and GX2s. The GX2s are significantly more 'stout'. I use them for my heavier saltwater stuff. I'd take pictures for you side by side, but the GX2 is a MH, so it's going to be thicker anyways.

I was given the 2 piece for Christmas. I exchanged it for the 7'6" 1 piece ML gx2. The singles are thicker but they are what I prefer.

I have a 2 piece 6' medium ugly stik elite, and a one piece 7' elite medium heavy that were give to me for free from a friend pairing down his collection. I love em for when I'm fishing with friends who need a rod they can't break. The one piece is indeed significantly thicker and heavier than the two piece, even for the added power and length.

I've never had a problem with the pieces coming apart during the cast, and I imagine if you secure them together tight when you're taking them out of your car, you won't have a problem either. As far as your other two concerns, breaking easier and not as sensitive: Ugly stiks are near impossible to break under normal use. Believe me I've tried. And when you have such durability in your rod, you're giving up sensitivity to begin with. The difference in sensitivity between the 1 and 2 piece will be negligible at best under normal use. Hope this helps!

Wow . Finally a thread for my favorite rod.I have several one and two piece ugly sticks.Have used them for a long time.Have never broken one.I love both kinds.I would get whichever one feels best with the reel, and fits your type of fishing you plan to do with it . The two piece is no problem.I rarely have had them separate when casting. To me,there is no difference.

My favorite one  is a 6 1/2   2 piece and it's been so long since it came apart that it's basically fused together now!

A 1 piece will usually be thicker than it's 2 piece counter part.....it will usually cast and retrieve better.  If transportation isn't a problem  get the 1 piece

Ugly Stiks are great rods, plain and simple. They come in a wide variety of sizes, for big saltwater game fish to fish well under a pound . I have well over 10 Ugly Stiks, many of them are over 20 years old,and these rods have caught me thousands of fish. Not one of them has ever broken, even with the abuse I put them through. They are not the most sensitive rod in the market, but a highly skilled bass fisherman with a  decent Ugly Stik will often out fish a decent fisherman with a professional custom bass rod.

Its good to see another Ugly Stik fan! They seem to get lots of hate on this site. Thanks for the advice

I'm getting an Elite to replace my Gx2 it wasn't sensitive enough for normal bass fishing. Do you recommend the 1 or 1 piece? Thanks for responding...

Because of the thickness will it be less sensitive and heavier? Thanks for responding...

Not trying to start a fight but I was at the Cabelas in Grand Rapids (grandville) and I was looking at the Elites, there was both a 7 foot medium 1 piece and a 7 foot medium 2 piece. Maybe the site is wrong I don't know...

@Largemouth21 If you can get it and don't need the two piece to make the rod more portable, always go with a 1 piece rod over a 2 piece, unless it's one of those weird (read expensive) rods where it comes apart at the grip instead of in the middle of the rod. I've yet to use one of those, but they're supposedly just as good as a 1 piece when it comes to sensitivity.

I've been using an uglystick for years. I don't have problems with sensitivity and as long as I fish for bass I will have them along. I personally will only use 1 piece but that is a preference thing. The ml gx2 that I got for Christmas loads up great on casts. I can't talk about catching though because the ice is on and so it'll be a couple months till I get to take it fishing.
