During their infancy, Al used to push Skyline rods and Cardinal reels. I got suckered into a combo, but didn't care for the rod or the reel. I believe that was during the first year of In-Fisherman (75), but may have been when Al was still writing for Fishing Facts. Roger 1 Quote
RichF Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Maybe KVD has a "no-trade" clause in his contracts with SK, Nitro, and Quantum lol. With regards to Al Linder, I'm sure money had something to do with the sponsor transition, it usually does, but...who cares? That's how he makes his living. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Let's be honest, 97% of fishing gear nowadays is pretty darn good when you hit a certain price point, regardless of brand/company. Since that's the case, the only reason for any professional angler to make a brand switch is $$. To me, it's no different from leaving one job for another that pays better. But seriously guys, a hypocrite and a liar? That's awfully harsh. Sure he's said that whatever brand he has worked for is great (er) (est), but how is that lying and/or hypocritical? All those brands actually do have really good stuff. And what brands are better than others is a completely subjective concept anyway. Saying Daiwa is better than Shimano or Quantum is neither true nor false because there's no actual objective truth to compare to. Cut the guy some slack! 3 Quote

Saying Daiwa is better than Shimano or Quantum is neither true nor false because there's no actual objective truth to compare to. Cut the guy some slack! No tackle manufacturer is going to put a "no trade" clause in a pro staff contract. The reason being is a guy can get hot for a few seasons and then hit bottom and tackle companies want to move on, a no trade clause works both ways and is no real benefit to a sponsor if a guy isn't performing. Now, as for Al Lindner, I agree the word liar is harsh but hypocrite fits and I'll tell you why. I have a DVD in which he says that "Trigger X soft plastics are by far the best on the market" and I heard him say not long ago that Big Bite baits makes the best plastic an angler could want. Now, I wouldn't call that a lie but a man of God such as himself wouldn't mislead anyone intentionally would he???? I'm sure he is doing only what his sponsors require but at some point doesn't he need to say that "Brand A doesn't sponsor us anymore so we started using Brand B and we found it is just as good" ??? Instead of lying Al uses a thing politicians call "spin", it is when they do one thing but shift words to make it sound like something different, this is so nobody can say you lied but if you are a man of faith and know the difference then isn't that the same as a lie? I don't care one way or another but I just wanted to point out that they have a business to make money and spirituality really does come second because if it didn't, you would never hear how good any product is and it would just be about the fish but that doesn't sell product so spirituality be damned, there is money to be made. 1 Quote
RichF Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 The "no trade" clause thing was kind of a joke. I'm also not sure I agree here. There are PLENTY of sponsored pros that have and retain sponsors regardless of their performance on the water. I actually don't think most companies even care as long as you still "work" for them, be it through advertising, speaking engagements, etc. Companies in the industry know how tournament fishing works. With the number of variables involved in fishing (luck being a big one) there's no way the pros could ever consistently perform at a dominant level. If sponsors dropped anglers because of their performance on the water the only guys that would have a shot at retaining anything would be KVD, Martens, Hack, Evers, and Morgan. I'm not even a religious man and I still think it's just not right to question Al's faith and character based on what he says about fishing tackle. Has he caught a bunch of fish on Trigger-X baits? Yup, so have a bunch of other anglers. Big Bite Baits? Yup, so have a bunch of other anglers. Why would he need to say " Brand A doesn't sponsor us anymore so we started using Brand B and we found it is just as good" ? You can see it with your own two eyes. He's showed us all on national television that both baits can catch fish. Is he lying/spinning when he says one is the best on the market? Not at all. If there is no way to prove that Trigger-X is actually better than Big Bite Baits or vice versa (and there definitely isn't), then saying one is the best isn't a lie, it's simply a subjective opinion. 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Up here in Canada we have a well known fisherman named Bob Izumi and he was with Shimano for 20 years before changing to Abu last year. Money Talks. Quote

But then again, when it comes to money I guess God can forgive Al for spreading some small "white lies". Well considering they fish top of the line stuff and things are updated regularly it probably isn't stretching that much to say "this is the best". Now I don't see Quantum competing with shimano especially on the higher end stuff but they may have gone the extra mile to provide them with things they felt made things much better. Its not unreasonable to think they could have received new reels with modifications already in place. I don't know maybe I'm just rambling in his defense at this point. I know I would be willing to switch to dewalt tools and promote them for free tools and $$ for the work I do. I use Milwaukee and feel like their tools are superior but business is business Quote
Flukeman Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I'm not going to knock anyone for getting any sponsorship in this economy. Especially when I don't know if the Sponsor moved on or the Pro or Show moved on. I make my gear decisions on my own research, I'm just glad there are sponsors out there so we can have shows to watch. As far as hypocrite or liar: I do not fish Diawa, but one of my favorite Pros does. I watched Ehrler pound some fish on MLF events and the guy has racked up 2.5 million over the last 12 years. Pretty easy for me to say Diawa is the best. The Angling Edge Show is my favorite show. Makes me laugh that people want to bash someone for their opinions changing, sponsors, or their religion. The rest of us do not care about your opinion on someones religion, we were all smart enough to remember our remote has buttons to change the channel at that point if we did not want to watch it. That's the great thing about America, choice! 1 Quote
