scbassin Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I can remember those days. Many times having oatmeal, potato pancakes,or peanut jelly sandwich for supper, Getting needed clothing for Christmas & not much of that, mom repaired a lot of our clothes.one of our best Christmas mornings was when my sister got a new store bought doll & I got a cap gun & holster. I feel family life was much better then. I could go on & on about growing in the 40's but so as not to bore y'all I'llshut this down with I hope y'all had a Merry Christmas & will have a great New Year. 10 Quote

My dad tells me about when he was a kid on the farm. The kids did all the work. Their idea of a good Christmas haul was a change of clothes and some oranges and nuts in the stocking. I will say they ate well though. My grandmother cooked three meals a day and if you said you were hungry, she'd put a biscuit in your mouth. She sewed us quilts for Christmas and I still have 2 of them. They grew and canned everything, slaughtered hogs and raised chickens for meat and eggs. My dad got off the farm as quickly as he could and went to work in a factory. It was like vacation to him. But he has a tightly knit family and we're all still very close. Super User Gundog Posted December 30, 2016 Super User Posted December 30, 2016 Swindle's christmas reminds me of my childhood holidays. We didn't have much but what we did have was a large family with a lot of relatives to visit. My favorite christmas was one where my mom, dad and siblings traveling to my aunt and uncles home and I spent the entire time playing with my brothers, sisters, and cousins. It was the memories that made that christmas so great. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 1, 2017 Super User Posted January 1, 2017 Swindle has always seemed pretty straight up and squared away to me. The kind of guy who'll tell it like it is, for what it is. Good man! Quote
