snake95 Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 Any brilliant methods to keep track of what line diameter (and maybe type) is on each of your reels? I have heard of guys using different colored lines for this purpose, but that's not going to work for me. I'm sure someone is going to say keep it simple and don't use too many line types - but I'm enjoying trying different options out. Surely someone out there has a cool "trick" to keep track of line. Any proven methods? Quote
Dypsis Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 Small sticker or label on the bottom somewhere. I have an Excel spreadsheet of all my combos that say line and lb test on it. I pretty much know what's on each one throughout the season it's just over the winter I'll forget 1 or 2. 5 Quote
MBB Nate Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Circle sticky dots in different colors. I put them on the butt of my rod. 3 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I get the finest tip Sharpie and plain beige masking tape, and write down little codes as small as possible like "20 PP" (20#PowerPro), "20 832" (20# Sufix 832), 25 SNP (25# FC Sniper) etc and tear out the small piece of masking tape and put it on the foot of the reel seat that faces the rod. The smaller the piece of masking tape the better because less gunk to clean later. Yes I need to remove the reel if I forget what line is on the reel, but it keeps it out of sight and relatively waterproof and safe from smudging. 2 Quote

Joseph Baggs Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 I wouldn't say it's brilliant, But I have a P-Touch labeler that I use for labeling, and I just use abbreviations like 10#FC, 30#PP, 20#832, 8#FC>10#PP... And they make the labels in many different colors and you can even use clear with black print so if you have a rod that is white or silver, Using the clear tape with black print works well and you just wrap around Is either somewhere on the lower portion of the split grip or right above the foregrip. I like using the yellow label tape with black print. 2 Quote

Motoboss Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 I use the same line test on all my baitcasters ? 30# Power Pro I use the same test on all my spinning combos. 10# Power Pro Actually, I used to put a piece of tape on the bottom of the reel seat arm with the line weight. Had to take the reel off to see it but had to take it off anyway to change it out. 1 Quote

I do both of these. The P-Touch labels have test and line type in 2-3 character abbreviations SGE = Seige SMK = Smackdown IVX - InvisX Etc. Small print size, two lines - baitcasters, it's inward of the handle on the underside; spinners, I put it on the spool where the pre-printed line capacity is. The Excel sheet I keep in Google-Drive, so it's available on my phone. Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 I have many many reels that are the same make/model duplicates, and since i have to make a quick decision on what rod/reel im taking i took different pieces of string or thread and tied it around the handle of the reel, cut the tag end close and it works great for different line sizes, and if its mono/fluoro/braid. When you want to change to a different lb test, different type, or brand you can cut it off and retie when you want to change it to something different. This way works the best when you have many reels that are the same. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 2, 2023 Super User Posted May 2, 2023 Rod Action dictates what type & size line are on them for me. Casting rigs ; MH = 15 lb FC (clear) M = 12 lb FC (clear) M (topwater) 19 lb mono (brown) Spinning rigs M = 10 lb braid main line (green) ML = 8 lb Braid main line. (light grey) A-Jay 2 1 Quote

Tatulatard Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 I size my reels and line to my rod powers. I'm not one to throw a weightless fluke on a MH with 20 lb flouro for example. That gets a M or MH rod with an easier handling diameter of flouro. ML: 10 lb flouro or 20 lb braid M: 12 lb flouro, 10 lb big game or 30 lb braid MH: 14 lb flouro or 40 lb braid H: 16-20 lb flouro or 50-65 lb braid H+: 20-25 lb flouro, 20 lb big game or 65 lb braid XH/XXH: 25-30 lb flouro, 20 lb big game or 65 lb braid Quote

Super User ATA Posted May 2, 2023 Super User Posted May 2, 2023 I do have simple sticker with line size at the bottom or side of rods I have in my truck, But as you said I keeping it simple for most parts and I dont have issue that much. thats my 13 main bass fishing combo. my line size increases by rod power so I know them all. Spining one 4lb one 6lb and 8lb(three combo) casting two 12lb one 14lb two 16lb one 17lb two 20lb(eight combo) swimbait rods two all 25lb(two combo). and since I fish often and even not fishing I always play with them and clean them in home so I really never forget what line I have on them. Just isn't working any more. ? I fish similar water to what he does and I have no use for a "heavy." 1 Quote

msgf91 Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 I saw an unboxing video of a kastking BFS reel and it had reel foot shaped stickers. This way you can write down the line and keep it safe between the reel seat and foot. I'd imagine you can do the same with oil change stickers. The way I do it is I keep all of my old spools in a work boot box and write down the reels I filled with them. Quote
scbassin Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 Sunline makes a band that goes around the bottom the handle that has the pound test on it. That works well for me & is simple enough. I would much rather fishing than being on a computer logging a bunch info that is probably not used much. The best way to learn to catch fish is time on the water. Quote
Super User king fisher Posted May 5, 2023 Super User Posted May 5, 2023 I can't remember names, birthdays, my anniversary, or what I had for dinner, but I can tell you the brand, diameter, pound test, age, and if I have stressed or backlashed every line on every reel I have. Add to that the 30 plus saltwater reels I use for work, and my wife complains about my memory. 1 1 Quote
