Super User clayton86 Posted December 24, 2016 Super User Posted December 24, 2016 Now that I'm hooked on some duck hunting and been chasing rabbits while waiting for duck to open again I think I'm due for a over and under 12 gauge and maybe a 20 also. Nothing to break the bank really I mean it is a hunting gun after all for something that's done in some the worst conditions and thickest of brush. Been looking at the stoeger condor line leaning towards either just a field model with 28" barrel or the long foweler model with the 30" or the tristar not sure the model just seen it at Walmart for 337 in 12ga and did some research they seem to be good reviews on all of them and are all twice what i seen it priced for. Super User Jrob78 Posted December 25, 2016 Super User Posted December 25, 2016 If you have an Academy close by, check out the Yildiz brand they sell. It's a Turkish company that Academy imports exclusively. The fit and finish is a lot better than the Stoegers I've seen. I've had one of their OU 20 gauges for about 8 years and I have nothing bad to say about it. I really only use it for dove hunting and the occasional clay shoot, so I haven't put 1000's of rounds through it but it's been great for my use. Nevermind, I see that you're in NY. Might be hard to come by. Quote
scrutch Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 The Tri-Star Setter is probably the gun you saw. A nearby sporting clays range owner just bought some for rental guns and he has been impressed with them so far. It might be one of the best value over/unders available right now. They have features that you have to spend $1000-$2000 and up to get, especially if you want a trap gun. Quote

Smokinal Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I own a Lanber and have been very happy with it. It fits like a Beretta 686 and is just as attractive. I did a ton of homework before I bought it because I, too, was in the market for a low budget gun but still wanted the best quality I could get for the $. After months of reviews, I settled on the Lanber. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted January 6, 2017 Author Super User Posted January 6, 2017 Not looking for a trap gun just a duck gun. Got bit by the duck hunting bug pretty bad and don't want a semi and have a pump I've been using. Really want the over under for being able to have two chokes one for decoying birds and one for farther shots or pass shooting. Quote
Smokinal Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I have the 2097 Sporting Lux and wouldn't call it any type of sport specific gun; just a plain old O/U shotgun. Quote

Just my opinion, but as a former competitive sporting clays shooter and now duck hunter, you are putting WAY too much thought into it. Use the choke you want for the furthest shots, and just do your job on the closer ducks. People get way to caught up in chokes and shells. Just do your part! Also with a pump or auto you get that third shot! Jeff Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted January 6, 2017 Author Super User Posted January 6, 2017 My plan was to shoot as many clays and farm pigeons in the off season with it like I would hunt ducks so I don't need that 3rd shot. I know o said I don't plan on shooting trap but I will shoot some for hunting practice I want a hunting gun not a fancy trap gun. I suck at shooting ducks or anything moving with a shot gun I've been a rifle guy for so long last year was the first time I fired bird shot in 18 years. Quote

Or 2 and 1 you don't drop with 1 shot? Wouldn't you like that 3rd shot to drop it? Just playing the devils advocate here, as I was in this same predicament before the start of his season and am VERY glad I went with a pump instead of O/U. Jeff 1 Quote

Jeff Yeah I was thinking about that before but I still think I'm gonna go with the O/U. Now I'm trying to decided on a 12 or 20. I was hammering ducks yesterday with the 20 I have had such bad luck or bad shooting with the 12 this year I switched to the 20 yesterday and I was dropping everything. Got my first drake white wing scoter and drake golden eye yesterday with the 20. Quote
jr231 Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 A few years ago, when I lived in michigan ... I would go Partridge and woodcock hunting with my grand father on the regular.. he had an awesome German shorthair that would point a bird for minutes.. anyway . He went 50/50 on some land with an old friend of his.. and he would come along too sometimes. I have a few shotguns.. and the 12ga was usually overkill for what we were doing so we all packed 20ga. My grandpa's friend had a Browning over/under and it was no doubt smoother than my pump. It was a real joy to shoot. I don't think you'll regret getting an over under. Quote
Super User gim Posted January 10, 2017 Super User Posted January 10, 2017 I think the disadvantage of not having that third shot when you might need it is not worth it. The stack barrel has the nice option of having multiple chokes but if you do enough hunting you'll find out soon enough that having more shots is almost always better, whether its a pump or auto loader. A 12 gauge is a more versatile caliber than the 20 too because you can shoot a small, light load or a heavy, magnum load. The 20 gauge might have trouble shooting larger birds with effeciency. 2 Quote

I have a 20ga O/U because I wanted one, it isnt a cheap one by any stretch, I love it but it'll never see a duck blind. Its a grouse and woodcock gun. Definitely not the best gun for ducks though and you will have a hard time killing a goose ethically at any distance whatsoever should that situation arise. There is a reason why so many waterfowl guys use semi autos and pumps. If shopping for a waterfowl gun, especially at that lower price range, please give single barrel repeaters another look. You'll get more for your money too. Especially if you look used. You can get a nice autoloader for right around what a lower tier O/U will run. Beretta 390, Browning Gold or Winchester SX3 come immediately to mind and any of those will still be working long after you are gone. All are a proven, soft shooting gas system and just plain reliable. 2 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 5, 2017 Super User Posted February 5, 2017 Take a look at the Ithaca SKB O/U 12 ga.. A truly fine weapon. The SKB box lock action is one of the strongest in the world. I bought mine in Japan, circa 1968, before Ithaca bought out the brand. She's dropped a lot of game birds in those earlier days. Quote

I'll second that...Ive owned an O/U SKB for 20 years and absolutely love it. Everyone that's ever held it has commented on the feel. The weight and balance is just "right" for pulling up quick on a flying bird. For the price they can be had used I don't think you'll do much better. Quote

Jeff HA! yeah, the statute of limitations has run out. If I'm going duck hunting, I'm taking a semi-auto with a composite stock and black anodized finish. IMO Duck hunting requires a "mud gun". I don't want to freak out when I trip and fall in the knee deep water on my way to the blind or bang my gun against a stump. ("mud guns" will be cheaper too!) 1 Quote
