NavyVet Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I do a lot of fishing with thick plastics and was hoping someone could help determine which of these two hooks they prefer. I am getting ready to order for the spring. of these two, which one do you feel is a better option? Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted December 22, 2016 Super User Posted December 22, 2016 Okay, having used both of these, I have to choose Gamakatsu. Trokar hooks are as sharp as they say they are. In fact, I find it hard to keep the hook point buried in the plastic. To me they became a nuisance, constantly shredding my plastics. Not to mention, in my opinion, too pricey. Now, having said that, I fished the entire last season using BPS hooks. Never had a problem. Hootie 5 Quote

If you're looking for a beefy (but not too much) EWG - try the Owner Wide Gap Plus Black Chrome Hooks. I have had Very Good Success with them; It's advertised as having a "Cutting Point" and it does. But it's a different sort of triangular design that translates to Solid hook ups without gashing through the plastics when tex-posed. One of my Go To Hooks in many situations. A-Jay 2 Quote

wdp Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 +1 from me. For EWG hooks, I use nothing but Gammys and Owner. Never had a problem with either. Both are super sharp. FWIW, the Owner treble hooks are excellent also. Those Trokar are just too dang expensive. 1 Quote

KDW96 Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I have Trokars and Owner. The owners cutting point, works just as well. Ive used them for years. I just cant justify the cost , of the Trokar. Quote
dwh4784 Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I bought a pack of Trokars on sale awhile back at Dick's for the same price as the Gammy's I normally use. Haven't used them yet but they are a bit stouter looking/feeling and the sharpness is great. Senkos are already so fragile though I'm sure they will shred them like others have experienced. Quote

A-Jay I use Trokars exclusively for punch baits. The trick with them is not to tex-pos them. Bring the hook point up just before it breaks the surface and you won't have that problem unles you're useing a D Bomb. . The hook will hold nicely in a rib. Mike 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 23, 2016 Super User Posted December 23, 2016 The Trokar hooks are on sale frequently. I like both brand and Daiichi X-Point. I am also a big fan of the Gamakatsu Sugoi designed by Gary Yamamoto. The Yamamoto Sugoi Hook is custom-designed by Gary, made exclusively for GYBC by Gamakatsu. This hook incorporates an offset shank and a unique hook-point alignment that insures a straight line pull for guaranteed hooksets. Once penetrated, the unique bend makes throwing the hook nearly impossible. The ultimate hook for Tex-posing. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted December 23, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 23, 2016 Look on-line for the Trokar Elite Pro assortment pack. $40 for 50 hooks. 3/0 4/0 5/0 6/0 assortment. Plus it comes with a cool case for them! Trokar and Gamakatsu are awesome hooks neither have let me down. Trokars are expensive though, but that assortment pack is a good deal. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 23, 2016 Super User Posted December 23, 2016 Gamakatzu for me. After over 30 years they are proven. Quote
Onvacation Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 Gammy hooks work well and are priced reasonably so they represent 90% of my hooks. Quote
Airman4754 Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 I use 7/0 Trokars with my 11" ribbon tails, 12" Power Worms, and 12" lizards. It's a huge hook and I want that cutting point. For everything else it's a Gammy because they don't tear up the plastic and still get the job done. Quote
