LCG Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I am looking to upgrade my current spinning reel, abu Garcia orra s30, with either a shimano nasci 2500 or a Pflueger supreme xt 30. I will be pairing this reel with a fenwick hmg 6'9" medium light fast action spinning rod and possibly a fenwick elite tech 6'10" medium light extra fast spinning rod. My main use will be for fresh water drop shotting, in line spinners, and possibly shakey head techniques. I fish in Ontario, Canada and mainly target largemouth and smallmouth bass with the occasional pike, perch, trout, etc. What are your thoughts and/or experience with these spinning reels? Is there a preferred gear ratio or line retrieval amount with the techniques mentioned? Is rod and reel balancing an important part of the equation or will a balancing kit be best? I played with both in store and both felt smooth and a definite upgrade to my current reel. The shimano felt smooth but heavier. The Pflueger felt lighter and equally smooth. Thank you for your time and opinions. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 22, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 22, 2016 I have several of the Pflueger XTs and really like them. I've never held the Shimano and have no desire to. All my spinning reels use to be Shimano until I went to Pflueger. 3 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 22, 2016 Super User Posted December 22, 2016 I'd take even the regular Supreme over the Shimano and there are a few reasons. The first is the Pflueger supreme XT is almost a full 2 ounces lighter in weight than the Shimano, that is nothing to sneeze at. The second thing is I really like the sealed drag of the Pflueger and that should be important to you since you will probably be fishing in colder weather at some point, water freezing on drag washers reduces performance. If you are looking for a good Shimano reel look at the Stradics, anything under those you're better off with a different brand. 1 Quote
PatrickKnight Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 Imo Shimano makes the best spinning reels on the market bar none once you get to the Stradic and above. Below that I look at Daiwa. The BG is my pick for a 100 dollar reel and the Procyon is my pick at the 150 price point. The BG is just simply better than the Nasci and the Procyon is better than the Pflueger imo. It should be noted I put more of a value on durability than I do weight. Both Daiwas have metal bodies so they are not super light weight but they are tough. Quote
Onvacation Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I just bought another Stradic Ci4+ on the TW close out sale. If it weren't for a great price, I was getting a Supreme XT because I love my wife's. That says an awful lot when the Supreme XT is in the running with a Stradic. Quote
Robert Riley Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I'd look around for the best deal. I've heard great things about both and I can attest to the quality of the Supreme XT having had one for 4+ years. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 23, 2016 Super User Posted December 23, 2016 I'm a Stradic guy, but want to stress how important it is for you to get your hands on several different reels at a local store. If the one on display is rough, ask to see one from a fresh box. See if you can put each on your preferred rods. I did this and really fell in love with the Stradic even after I was set on buying Pflueger. Don't get me wrong, they are fantastic reels and you may absolutely love them. If so, go for it! They just didn't feel right in my hands. If I were to buy another reel, I would certainly get the feel of some of the newer Pfluegers just to be thorough. My .02. And welcome to the forums, too! LCG Posted December 23, 2016 Author Posted December 23, 2016 Thank you all for guidance and experience. Appreciate the advice. Looks like the Pflueger supreme xt and stradic line gets lots of support so now to wait for the boxing day sales Merry Christmas everyone. Quote
Super User burrows Posted December 23, 2016 Super User Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) I just got the nasci and for 100 bucks there is no smoother and better built reel at that price point IMO, now the reel is a bit heavy not that significant but since reels have gotten so much lighter you can feel those extra couple of ounces that is the only issue, if you think that is an issue,I don't mind it. 8.8 ounces is not heavy compared to what reels weighed just a few years ago. LCG Posted January 3, 2017 Author Posted January 3, 2017 Update : went to the store and played with a bunch of stuff. Decided to purchase the new 2016 Pflueger president xt and a 7ft medium fast fenwick hmx (new 2016 model as well). Both seemed to be excellent values and hopefully will meet my needs. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. 3 Quote
PatrickKnight Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 I think you will be very happy with that combo. Quote
