Dirteediver Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Hi. I am new to fishing with spinning reels and the use of rods. From what i have gathered, iv decided to purchase a OKUMA AVENGER AVII-80 REEL 20/400 25/290 30/220 (lbs/yrds) and pair that with a RAPALA PITBULL EXTREME 15kg rod. Id like to put a 80lbs/300yds braid (sufix) on it. Id like to use jigs and popper lures Id like to be able to cast with this set up 1. Is that a good match? 2. What different size braid can i use? 3. Will the 300yds fill the spool? 4. What leader and size should i use? 5. What jig weights can i use? Your advise to the matter will be much appreciated. Thanks Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 21, 2016 Super User Posted December 21, 2016 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ In advance of answering questions & / or offering useful tackle advice, some additional info could help . . . Where are you fishing (fresh or salt water) ? Are you fishing from a boat or the bank ? What species of fish are you targeting ? A-Jay Quote

Kidflex Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 A GT will destroy that reel. If your going GT fishing, stick to the tried and true reels. Stellas & saltigas. Rods too, carpenter, smith, ripple fisher. Your best bet is going over to another forum like 360tuna, gtpoppin, jignpop etc. look at saltywater tackle. Sami and Paul know their stuff. Kilsong at jignpop probably fishes more than anyone on this planet and has a wealth of knowledge with many different species. He also carries black hole products that have been proven. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 21, 2016 Super User Posted December 21, 2016 Welcome aboard! We've got a number of saltwater anglers here who will hopefully chime in to give you their thoughts. @SirSnookalot come back! This one is up your alley Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 21, 2016 Super User Posted December 21, 2016 There ya go! Someone with knowledge! I answered on your double post. But this is good info from @Kidflex. Quote
Dirteediver Posted December 21, 2016 Author Posted December 21, 2016 Thanks guys. Just a quick one Does the set match? Quote
Kidflex Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 It should match up but be careful and not put too much pressure on the reel. Most GT popping is around reefs where you need PE10-12 line with a good twisted leader or similar. They use heavy drags and ridiculously strong rods to keep the fish from burying down and breaking you off. Those GT poppers are quite expensive. That reel might have issues with locked drag and blistering runs from a GT. Other reef fish like coral trout and makerel should be fine. Good luck. Quote
Dirteediver Posted December 22, 2016 Author Posted December 22, 2016 Thanks. If i use the 80lbs (can i even use 80lbs?) braid what size leader should i use? Quote
