MDbassin Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Would you guys throw squarebill sand lipless cranks on the typical Med/Mod crankbait rods or would you use something else? I ask because where I fish according to my local DNR website the waters I bass fish have a max depth of 8-10 ft so that is the deepest I will be cranking so it's not like I will be throwing 8 or 10 xd's. From what I can gather the typical crankbait rods of Med/Mod with a slow 5.4:1 reel only really help with deep crankbaits (not saying they don't help with all crankbaits but they really shine with the deep cranks) Quote
The Next KVD Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I throw my squarebills on a 7' mn/f because these baits are typically thrown in cover that I need to get the fish away from. I throw my lipless cranks on a typical mh/mod. Crankbait rod because I'm throwing the bait a long ways and need the moderate action to keep a fish hooked from a distance. I use a 7:1 reel for the squarebills and a 8:1 for lipless. Even my deep cranking is done on a 7:1. Slow reels are obsolete in my setups. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 18, 2016 Super User Posted December 18, 2016 Giving opinions on rods is tough and my post are what works for me. I wouldn't want you to go buy rod until you pick it up at least at the shop Series and touch it and bring your reel to see how things balance for you. I fish the majority of my crankbaits on two St. Croix Premier Series Crankbait Casting Rods. A bit softer in the tip, moderate and moderate/fast. No braid for me. Some lighter baits like Rapala Shad Raps and Original Floater types I throw on spinning set ups. Have fun in your search for that crankbait rod. Quote
JustinJ Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I fish shallow weedy ponds/lakes 90% of the time and fish a medium fast action rod. I actually like the fast tip to rip traps through the grass. Gear ratios are overrated Quote
Bigchunk Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I like 7'6 mh rod for lipless, 7 mh for square bill, glass crankbaits rods for both Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted December 18, 2016 Super User Posted December 18, 2016 Go look at the Irod Genesis II IRG703CC “Gabe’s Rip Rap Special”. That is one of the rod I throw traps, squarebills, heck just about any small to mid sized crank. I use it to chase both tidal bass and stripers. My second rod that fills this need is a Falcon Bucoo Micro Trap Caster. That rod specs as a 7 ft MH MF. Both handle my needs well Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted December 18, 2016 Super User Posted December 18, 2016 It depends on the cover. Ripping a trap from vegetation requires a stouter, faster rod than fishing one in open water. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted December 18, 2016 Super User Posted December 18, 2016 2 different baits - frequently used - require 2 different rods. Current favorite for lipless cranks is the Falcon Bucco trap caster - a 7' MH rod with a little bit of tip. I'm a big fan of this rod, it throws half ounce lipless cranks and has the backbone to set the hook after the 100' cast. Square bills go on one of several different rods. I have a BPS Extreme 7'4" MH rod ( which is really more of a M) or it goes on a Fenwick AETOS 6'8" MH - which is the same rod I use for spinner baits & chatter baits. Quote
Robert Riley Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I rarely fish traps, but my buddy uses a glass Dobyn's for traps, it's a MH/F I think? @tbone1993 I do however fish squarebills often, I use a Dobyn's Champion D685cb, it's a MH/MF, the shorter Dobyn's MFs have a been quicker action than a traditional moderate fast. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I like a little a mod fast action for those since they're often being popped off the weeds. Power dictated by lure weight and cover. 2 Quote

bigfruits Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 it depends on several variables but i generally like something a little faster than a typical moderate crankbait rod for lipless and squarebills. i prefer 7'-7'4" MH graphite rod with a 7.x:1 ratio reel. Quote
Poolshark Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I personally use a medium moderate for both in open water medium heavy moderate for both around cover medium heavy fast with lipless cranks in heavy grass. Im like you, most water around here is shallow, so I do not do a lot of deep crankbait fishing. A 6:1 to 7:1 is fine, slow down or speed up as needed. I've used slower gear ratios but they wear me out with lipless crankbaits. This may be my inability to play the fish, but If I fish square bills with a fast action rod, I tend to loose them fairly often. (Even if I back off the drag) Unacceptable for me. Rattle traps not so much the case for some reason. Quote
MBB Nate Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 My crank rig is my cheapest rig and my 2nd favorite behind my finesse spin rig. Pflueger Trion in 6.3:1 and a 6'6 Med Mod Lightning Shock rod. I throw a lot of 1.5's, 1/2 oz lipless, small spinners and a whopper plopper 90 on it. Quote
Scarborough817 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 my lipless are thrown on a 7'3" Med/Mod rod my squarebills are thrown on a MedHvy/Mod Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted December 20, 2016 Super User Posted December 20, 2016 I use a 7ft med/mod action.I like a little softer tip. Quote
mwh33 Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I throw mine on a dobyns 705 cb champion xp. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 20, 2016 Super User Posted December 20, 2016 My favorite squarebill and lipless crankbait rods are Berkley Lightning rod shocks. I don't know exactly what they are rated taper wise, as Berkley doesn't label them. The feel like Mod. Fast, too me. I use the 7' MH for ripping them through thick-ish grass, bomb casting/covering water on flats,etc... and the 6'6" M for target casting around laydowns, docks, isolated clumps of grass etc... They both work perfectly with the 1.5 + 2.5 sized squarebills and 1/2 oz lipless baits that I use most often. Enough "tip" to be excellent cranking rods, and enough backbone to get clean rips and pops out of the grass without loading up and causing the bait to dig in further. And the best part...............they are $40 at Walmart. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted December 20, 2016 Super User Posted December 20, 2016 Personally I use a M/M for my 100-200 size squarebills Lipless in open water will usually be thrown on a MH/M and lipless in/around grass will be thrown on a MH/F Quote
Yudo1 Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 I use 1 rod for both baits: klx crank, rip, twitch in mh/mf. I also use it for chatter baits. It has the backbone to rip through light vegetation. I use a 7.1 gear ratio reel. Quote
