Payyydro Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 Hey guys, I have a quick question. I went fishing yesterday morning. two of the bass that I caught accidentally got left in a separate cooler and died on their own. no ice. outside temp 47. they've been in there about 12 hrs. now. my question is are they still safe to clean and cook or should I cook and give to dogs. Super User A-Jay Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ Can't say for certain as to whether or not these fish are safe to eat. If there is any question, I would advise against it. Also, as a long time dog owned, spoiled stank fish is not something I'd feed them either. YMMV. A-Jay 5 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 16, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 16, 2016 Fish lay around in fish markets all day all over the world and people still purchase them, even in much warmer temperatures. The best way to tell if your fish is still good is fillet it, then smell the fillet. Trust me you'll know.......... 4 Quote
Attila Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I wouldn't eat them but that's up to you....and I wouldn't give them to the dog either. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 Welcome aboard! I'd pass on 'em for you and dogs. Leave in woods for scavengers to enjoy. 3 Quote

Super User Gundog Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 Bury them, they make good fertilizer but thats the only thing I would do with them. Quote

Easiest way to tell is to look at the gills, if they ain't red or reddish I ain't eating em! 2 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 I would like to think for $5.00 you could go to a fish market and pick up dinner and most likely be better table fare than a bass. I think it is fine, No need to smell it or anything just clean it and eat it. Don't give the dog any. Let us know how it was. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 16, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 16, 2016 I give my dogs pieces of raw fish while I'm cleaning them all the time........ I guess I'm in the minority but boy do they go crazy for it Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 Do they prefer catfish? 2 Quote

stk44 Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Too late either way, but foods that require refrigeration must stay below 40 degrees to reduce the amount of bacteria. 12 hours is a long time to not refrigerate. Just use that as a guide next time. Quote
