A friend of mine is consumed/infatuated with striper fishing and needs a good set up. He will be using it primarily in Connecticut rivers. Based on my limited experience and research... I recommended to him a Daiwa Lexa 3500 or 4000 spinning reel. It was on sale for $79 but just went up to $89.... and an Ugly Stik Tiger for $69.

Do you think this is a good combination for stripers? Can you recommend anything else in the same price range that would be better? Thanks in advance!

Ugly stick striper rod and a 3000 sounds good to me. Diawa Lexa is a good recommendation.

Okay.. I'll recommend the Striper rod.. but.. It says lures up to 1oz. I know he sometimes throws heavier lures than that. Is the Tiger rod that says 3/4 to 6oz too much rod?

I think so personally but if he throws heavier weight then he is going to need a get a heavier weighted rod. I fish for striper and I don't throw any sinkers heavier than 1 ounce. That's just me tho.

I'd say upsize that reel to the 5000 range. I use a 7' MH Ugly Stik GX2 with a Penn Battle 2 5000 for most of my saltwater stuff (rockfish included). Never had any issues. But I don't think I'd be comfortable with a 3000 reel.

I don't generally throw anything larger than 1 oz either. If I think I will, I swap the reel over to a 9' H rod I won in a charity auction. It'll throw up to 3 oz and that's the absolutely max I would need where I fish.

Where is he planning to fish for them? Because fishing the Bay and its tributaries is a whole different situation than say surf fishing in OC or AI.

Thanks again.. forgot to mention that it must be a spinning set up.. and has ~$150 budget for combo.

Fishing from a small boat on Connecticut rivers.. I'll have him look at Penn battle 2.
