Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 15, 2016 Super User Posted December 15, 2016 I'm wondering how many deer you guys harvest per season... I'm asking because a person in our family has killed 4 eight points and 2 ten points this year and the season isn't even half way over, seems like way too many big bucks... Idk why he doesn't just shoot doe after he has killed a buck or two, he bow and rifle hunts and you can take doe at anytime with a bow here in north florida. How many doe and how many bucks do y'all harvest each year? 1 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I'm not sure on your laws but here that would be illegal. We can shoot up to 3 bucks. 2 with a bow and 1 with a gun. Right now I'm sitting at 0 deer this year. It hasnt been good for me. Usually I shoot 1-2 depending on the year. I only take enough that I need. I'm hoping to change that during muzzleloader season. 1 Quote
riverbasser Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Dont really do much hunting anymore since I lost my free spot and I'm too cheap to pay for a lease. I still try to get 2 a year bucks or does don't matter to me. Just want the meat in the freezer. That gguy seems to be a trophy hunter. There are plenty around me the same way. Sometimes they will give me the whole deer and just ask me to cut The horns off for them 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 15, 2016 Author Super User Posted December 15, 2016 There is a daily bag limit of two deer here, and during the "doe days" you can only have 1 antlerless deer per day, but other than that I assume you can shoot as many as you legally here. Quote

Your are only allowed to have 4 deer in your possession. That includes any deer in your freezer. 1 Quote

Super User fishballer06 Posted December 15, 2016 Super User Posted December 15, 2016 Here is PA, you're allowed one antlered deer per year. So whether you get your buck in early bow season, during rifle season, or late muzzleloader season, that's it. As for doe, you can apply for a doe tag for your WMU (wildlife management unit, the states way of splitting the state up into smaller sections) in late July/early August. After that first week they're available to state residents, they go available to out of state sales and they usually sell out in no time. If the WMU you hunt still has leftover doe tags after the out of state people get their two weeks to apply, residents can apply for a second one. Each of these doe tags are $6 each. It astonishes me to hear about how you guys are allowed to kill all these deer in your states, but I'm guessing it's because there are far less hunters to deer in your states. They estimate that in Pennsylvania on the opening day of deer season, there are 750k-1M hunters in the woods. Our rifle season is two weeks long. The first 5 days is antlered deer only. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 15, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 15, 2016 I believe it's 1 buck and 4 does per person a season in Kansas. Most I've taken was 3, and that was the same day. Normally take 1 or 2 and call it good. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 well, let's see. If she's running right, my combine can harvest about 10 deer an acre. ; ) 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 I have not been hunting in quite a few years. However, I don't think my wife and I could possibly eat more than one deer in a year, so I wouldn't shoot more than that. 2 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted December 17, 2016 Super User Posted December 17, 2016 Here in NY we get 1 buck tag for regular season 2 either sex for bow/muzzle loader if you buy each license otherwise it's just 1 either sex of you go just bow or just muzzle. Then we get up to 4 doe tags per wmu some will give you all 4 and some you get none. Where I live I usually can get 4 this year was the first time in my 18 years of hunting I've ever seen my county run out of doe tags. this year I only went deer hunting twice as I have lost my passion for it I spent maybe 4 hours in the woods for deer this year. Got my buck opening day of gun and then a button buck on thanksgiving pushing but so did 4 other guys shoot the same deer. That was it for my deer season the last day is today the 17th last day of muzzle loader which wraps up our deer season. I personally like like to get at least 2 normally but like I said I've lost my passion for it I've swapped my venison space in the freezer with ducks and some coyote hides. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted December 20, 2016 Super User Posted December 20, 2016 It depends on what state your in. Each state can be different. Some states also allow "party hunting" which is defined as having a group of 2 or more hunters in relative proximity filling each other's tags. So even if one of those hunters has already filled their tag, they can still hunt with another hunter who still has one and shoot another deer that the other hunter can tag. Some hunters are in it for the venison, some are trophy hunters. Some are both. Generally the best way to manage a deer herd is to shoot big bucks and antlerless deer, while allowing smaller bucks to walk. I don't see any reason to harvest more than 1 or 2 deer if your in it for the meat. Two whole deer is a lot of venison. But some areas are very over run with deer so there's no limit. 2 Quote
Al w. Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 We only shoot what we will eat (usually 1 or 2). Sometimes we'll get one for someone else who wants the meat. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 30, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 30, 2016 Well I ran out of time and the bucks on our property just wouldn't cooperate. This doe comes in at least once a day, so I ended up just taking her so I can have my summer sausage and snack sticks. It was still a great feeling harvesting a deer off my own property, something I never imagined I'd be able to do. 2 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 31, 2016 Super User Posted December 31, 2016 When I lived in Jersey there were 4 deer seasons every year, including a doe-day & black powder season. I hunted deer during the 6-day shotgun season and the Bow & Arrow season (the month of October when bucks were in the rut) During most years I would bag 2 deer (1 gun/1 bow), but there were several years when I bagged just one, but the year that stands out the most was the year I got skunked (a story in itself). Al w. Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 This a pic (although not good) of my son and a deer he shot this past week on some public land accessible only by kayak. 2 Quote
AC870 Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 I try to take 2 a year, a buck and a doe. Alabama allows basically as many does as you want and 3 bucks a year. I been pacing myself. Last week or 2 of January is our best hunting and they've extended the season to Feb 10 this year. 1 Quote

Al w. Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Yea, we are very blessed-a lot of small creeks and tributaries nearby. 1 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 We get 6 tags statewide,, with no more than 3 in certain counties, 2 in others and 1 in others. Out of the six tags per year you are allowed 1 Buck per year regardless of weapon. So I usually take one Buck,, if I am lucky enough to find a 140" or larger,, if not all 6 will be doe's. 1 Quote

Loomis13 Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 I start out bow hunting for a mature buck but by the time late season rolls around (Dec 20-Jan. 10 in iowa) I am trying to get a doe to have some meat for the freezer. So I guess at least one doe. Shot my first buck in like 3 years this year. If you own farm land, you can get what are called deprivation tags and harvest a ton of deer, but a situation like the OP's seems extreme... Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 6, 2017 Super User Posted April 6, 2017 On a good year I will only get 2-3, and I won't ever see them. On a bad year I will get a couple dozen, sometimes 3 or 4 a day. With several maimed bad enough that I have to put them down with a 9mm to the head. Yeah my numbers are backwards. But so is the age of the deer I "harvest". Those little fawns don't stand a chance when 32 feet of blades and augers come whipping in at 10 mph in waist high first cutting hay. 99% of them I never see until I spot the carnage on the next pass. The other 1% jump up at the last nano second, and there's nothing I can do but turn my head. The few times I have attempted to stop on a dime with the machine, has resulted in a big mess that I have to take care of. You wanna see a grown, 300lb man turn into a blubbering baby...because that's what happens when I have to pull a tiny fawn still alive, but chewed to shreds out of that thing, while it blats for it's mother until I shoot it in the head. And then spend the rest of a long day covered in blood, hair, and guts. I got numb to it years ago. I am not anti hunting, but I lost my stomach for adding any further contributions to deer population control via a tree stand. The only good thing is, there's less stupid yearlings to run out in front of peoples cars and cause a wreck, and they never seem to go to waste. Assorted other critters soon come out of the wood work to dine on fresh venison veal. Often before I even leave the field. Quote

First buck in 5 years. 1 Quote
