Comartin Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 Being an angler on a budget I only have a couple rod and reel set ups so having rods for multipurpose is a must. I am looking for advice about what line to put on a crankbait and spinnerbait/chatterbait rod. The rod and reel setup is a 6.4:1 lews tournament MG and a 7 foot medium fast abu garcia vengeance. I used 14 lb berkley vanish fluorocarbon last year and found the set up to be too light for spinnerbait/chatterbaits however I liked it as a cranking rod. Would a higher quality FC line such as Sunline Sniper reduce line stretch and improve hook ups or would braid be a better option? Not a fan of tying braid to leader knots either but would consider. I know separate set ups would be ideal but this is what I have to work with. Thanks for the help Quote
FishOnLMB Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 IMO, I like to use 15lb flurocarbon. Any brand should do, but since you are on a budget, going with Berkeley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon should do you good. I have found that I can throw chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, squarebills, medium divers, jerkbaits, softplastic swimbaits, and smaller swimbaits on a 6:6:1, medium action rod with 15lb fluro on it. Flurocarbon doesn't have to much of a tenedency to stretch as much as mono, but when fishing cranks with exposed hooks, you shouldn't have to worry to much about the line stretch with fluorocarbon. For rod and reel set up, what you have should be fine if you are on a budget. What weight spinnerbait and chatterbaits are you throwing on your rod? Quote
Robert Riley Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I try to use the lightest line possible. In town where I do 90% of my fishing, so I use 10#. But I'd recommend 12#-15# FC for for what you're fishing. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted December 15, 2016 Global Moderator Posted December 15, 2016 I use a 12# Yo Zuri for both presitations. Being on a budget this line would be ideal for you. It is cheap and much stronger than advertised. It does stretch a bit, but no more than some flouro's and less than most mono's. I use Sniper for all bottom contact presentation's. Imho, useing it for moving baits is really not warranted. Mike Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted December 15, 2016 Super User Posted December 15, 2016 Personally I use 12lb Berkey 100% FC for both of those. Quote
rawjuice Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 I use 15 FC for spinnerbaits, with Crankbaits I use a couple different kinds, 12-15lb FC or 10lb Yo zuri hybrid. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 16, 2016 Super User Posted December 16, 2016 I'm pretty much a mono type of guy. I just can not seem to make a switch to braid. I have a couple of fluoro set ups. My thought on mono and not going to braids. For the most part my rods are fast and x-fast. Not a lot of give in the rods. I figure mono has to help in being a bit of a shock absorber. I use quality mono and I know that I change my line more than necessary. Just an anal type of guy. No problems using it. No regrets using it. I use fluoro on two St. Croix premier crankbaits rod set ups. All I use these rod for are crankbaits. FC seems to be the ticket for them. Quote
The Next KVD Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 I would have to go with 15lb Seguar Tatsu fluorocarbon. It has a diameter close to 12lb but with 15lb strength . I'd spend the extra money on the line just for this reason and the fact your using it as a multi techniques. It may be expensive but this stuff lasts along time and in the long run is cheaper. I went two seasons on a single reel. Quote

Looking to maybe use it this year on my cranking rods instead of the Sniper I still like and use it a lot. Abrasion resistance is better than I anticipated. Pros: It's great for pretty much any moving bait. Cons: It's discontinued Quote

BuzzHudson19c Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 I know you said you don't like to run braid to a flouro leader, but I really think it's the best option. I never liked the idea either until I got good at tying leader knots. That's my only advice. I hate having a whole spool of flouro. Quote
